The 4020 was more popular because it was designed for the mass market. 90 hp rowcrop tractors were the best sellers back in the 60s. The 5020 was originally designed for western wheat farms like were I farm. Their main purpose was for pulling huge drawbar loads. Not baling hay, raking hay, cultivating corn, or running a corn picker. JD did come out with a 5020 rowcrop but the only difference was the long axles and a few more inches of clearance for cultivating. Back then as well as today, there were way more corn/bean/dairy farmers for which the 4020 was way better suited for then a 5020. We had a 4020, 5010, and 5020 during the 60s and early 70s. If you are looking for a chore tractor, the 4020 would be the better choice. Being smaller they can get into tighter spaces, they had the option of the powershift transmission, and 540/1000 rpm PTO. The 5020 only had a 1000 rpm PTO. As for reliability, both tractors are good in that department. I would give the slight edge to the 4020 but the 5020 is also reliable.
