I was running my 4020 about a week or so to grind feed (1st time with the 4020) and I had to switch the pto to the 1000 shaft. Everything went real smooth on the first 2 ton batch however about 500 lbs. into the 2nd batch the pto just stopped. It did not pull the motor down or anything, had to switch tractors to finish. Now my question is what happened? Is there something I can check easyily, or is this serious? I have an I&T shop manual but it is really confusing me, is a deere manual better? If it is the pto clutch what is the degree of difficulty? Is this possibly something to check from behind or will a split be involved? Thank you in advance, sorry for rambling.

First check to be sure the pto shaft didn't slip out.Next check under the dash to see if the linkage came off or fell apart. The dash face comes loose with I bolt on the bottom on an old style, the sides of the dash come off on the consoles..Swing it out of the way carefully as there are wires connected to it. If it is an old style with the pto lever on the side of the dash, move the lever and see if the rod is moving up and down into the top of the bell housing, and there is a fair amount of resistance as it applies the clutch. If no resistance is felt the linkage could have fallen off inside the bellhousing, the throw out bearing disintegrated, the clutch fingers worn off,or had a disc failure. If it is a console model, look on the left side inside the dash and follow the pto linkage down to just above the top of the bellhousing. The linkage operates a small lever hooked to a rod.Make sure the lever hasn't fallen off the rod,or the lever has worn to the point that it won't actuate the rod. If this is all good on either model, remove the access plate under the bellhousing, and with the traactor idling, have someone engage the pto.You should see the throw out bearings move toward the engine. If the throwout bearing is not moving, you have a mechanical problem on the old style or a hydraulic problem on the new(console) style. If the bearings are moving approximately 1/2"-3/4"and pushing the fingers, you have internal clutch problems which will require a split,or a gear train failure in the rear of the tractor.

Sorry, I think it is a syncro-range. It has 1&3 w/rev, 2&5 w/rev etc. Please correct me if I am wrong.
