There is a 4230 with an M&W Turbo coming up at auction next weekend. I went and took a look at it this AM. The tractor has 3500 hours on it, and the engine was overhauled by a local John Deere dealer 1000 hours ago. The owner (who is retiring) bought it new in 1976 said it used oil from day one so he finally had to have it rebuilt. The tractor has been shed kept, and is in exceptional condition. It has a quad-range trans, brand new BFG radials, JD cloth seat with air ride suspension, Unverfurth duals, and 10 front weights. A/C blows cold.

Just wondering what I should bid on it? Also curious about how many horses this tractor will produce? The owner said he had never checked it on a dyno, but told me that it will do anything his 4440 will.

Could the add on Turbo would have damaged the engine and caused it to burn oil?

This guy is trying to sell something that is not as good as advertised. A properly tuned, ballasted and operated 4440 is a sho-nuf hoss!

They are just a 404 on steriods. They were a peice of crap as far as power and durability I used to have one, it was gutless and couldnt hold together even after a new rebuild
Deere tried to get more power out of a 404 and it didnt work very good. Some guys had good luck with them but he ones i have seen are disasters. they dont take much abuse compared to a 466.
good luck

I put one of those M&W turbo kits on a 4230 years ago. With the turbo kit added and not touching the pump we didn't gain an horsepower at all. Then I turned the smoke screw about 1/6 of a turn and the tractor put out 128hp.

He could have this tractor cranking out 140 horsepower easily.

When did he add the turbo? The oil consumption problem probably stems from improper break-in, or something that was wrong with the engine from day one. It's hard to say just what caused it. However, for this thing to keep up with a 4440, which I find a little hard to believe, but oh well, it would have to be cranked up pretty hard. The 4230 has the 6404 engine (404 cubes), vs. the 6466 (466 cubes) of the 4440. There is no comparison in terms of low-end torque. I would be a little leery of any 4230 turboed and turned up like that. If you want a tractor to do the work of a 4440, my advice would be to buy a 4440.

A 4230 is only about the same hp as a 4020,to compare it to a 4440 is ridiculous even with
a turbo that probably only adds 20hp.
