meant to also say that I have a JD 4400 4x4 and I may have needed to use the locker a time or two.

you want to be cautious with the use of the lock. This is one of the least explained options on these tractors. You always want to be completely stop. The mechanism moves pins through the ring gear housing that ties both the wheel movements together. A lot of people jam down on these while their tractor is moving and bent or start damaging the pins. Local JD mechanic showed me an assy that was really damaged. This is only an emergency type item, where you are stuck and need to engage both wheels. My thought are that your situation on the lift may be normal as you are now trying to rotate the transmission rather than just the differential.
