Rman, that helps a little, if it doesn't knock at idle & only knocks as you throttle up or under load it probably isn't a loose flywheel or clutch driver. ~Depending on how heavy sounding the knock is, it could be a bearing, or piston pin, or even excess piston side clearance. ~If you still have the crankcase cover off, try bringing each piston to the center of it's stroke then rock the crankshaft within it's play & feel the piston pin area between the piston & small end of the rod [if the piston pins are worn you will feel the rod move before the piston does. ~Try jacking the flywheel up, then jacking the clutch pulley up while watching the inside of the crankcase area at the crankshaft to main bearing area. [you might have a worn main bearing] ~Is the knock once per revolution? Or every other revolution? [you can't tell?}...just hook a timing light to either plug wire & point it at yourself or someplace you can see the flash, then listen for the knock,, if it knocks at the same frequency as the flash it is once per rev {assumes a Wico C or X mag, or distributor}. If you get two flashes for one knock it is every other revolution & only happens on the firing stroke of one side, if that is the case, try the t-light on both plug wire sides & when you find the side that the light flashes as the knock occurs you at least will know what side to look on. ~Just for a [see what happens], try backing the ignition timing off a little….first mark the mag/dist to the governor with a scribe or paint mark [so you can put it back] , then loosen the mag/dist retaining bolts, then rotate the top of the mag towards the FRONT of the tractor about ¼”-3/8”, then try running the tractor again. If the knock goes away, post back [or E-Mail] with your mag/or dist type for directions on how to set the mag or distributor up for base & running timing. JDClooney@aol.com
