Have been advised to replace the Wico C mag on my 41 JD-A with the Wico X and not to bother trying to rebuild the C seeing it doesn't have a 3 stamped on/in the outer mag case. Is this sound advice or...?

rob,
Your Wico C is an early version, which had problems with the stalk which holds the magnetic rotor coming loose, due to a lack of material at the joint of the stalk and base. Wico made two improvements, and for ease of identification cast the number 3 near the top of the case on each side, indicating the improvement was present. It is possible your C is worth rebuilding if the stalk has not come loose. This can be determined by removing the distributor cap and rotor button, holding the magneto case firmly, and trying to wiggle the shaft from which you removed the rotor button from side to side. If there is perceptable movement, the stalk is likely loose. Staking the stalk at the base is not a lasting fix - take my word for it. When the stalk is loose, it affects the time the points open, as the cam on the shaft will be wiggling around, and this leads to poor performance from the magneto. So, do some checking, and if the stalk is firm, go ahead and rebuild it as you will likely not use it enough to wear it out.

Thank's Duane. Answerd my question perfectly and now I know what I needed to about both my mag problem and also my other source of information? Knew I could count on them for good sound advice but never hurts to double check anyway right?
