I have a 1967- 3020 and I can't keep load shaft seals from leaking. Was replacing a couple times a year and dealer told me to try replacing the bushings in the casting of the tractor. I did but within 60 hrs they were leaking again. Do I need a new load shaft? There is no visible wear showing on old one. I did notice that there is a lot of up and down movement on the "yolk" or "A"-frame under the tractor no movement front to back, Is this normal??? any help would be appreciated, I'm getting very frustrated ( but very good) at replacing these seals---also losing a lot of hydraulic fluid.

I worked for a JD dealer during the more popular days of the 3020 and 4020. I replaced a lot of those seals and many times the shaft also. I put in some of the oversize bushings also. I don't think the bushings with o rings were available then but know that the seals seemed to be one of the chronic problems with this series of tractors.

O-ring bushings will fix it. They are the only way to go! My dealer has the JD bushings machined to take O-rings. Only thing they sell. I have done 2 tractors with them. They do work!

Rob,I agree with 3-b.If the yoke(wishbone) moves side to side it shortens seal life.JD has special shim washers of diff. thickness'for this purpose.I like JD tractors but have never figured out why they put a seal like that at the bottom of resourvoir.Newer series have better seals!Jim B

Were the new bushings you installed machined to accept o-rings? They're after-market, but should be available through your dealer. Only reliable "fix" I've found for leaking load control shaft seals..... ..

if the bushing(s) are not tight in the housing the seals will leak pretty soon after replacement. the solution is aftermarket seals and bushings or a jd bushing kit that contains oversize bushings that probably require machinning of the housing.
after the bushings are tight in the housing check also the bushings in the drawbar support and, as posted, prevent side movement of the support with special shims.
since the drawbar pull and push is transferred to the load control shaft, seal life is extremely shortened when doing drawbar work. you can try to limit drawbar movement by using strong bolts with nuts instead of the drawbar side limiting pins and tigten the bolts very tight to 'clamp' the drawbar in the rear support. make shure the rear support hardware is not missing and tight. you can also 'tie' the drawbar to the third point support by means of a cable turnbuckle or something similar. this 'fixing, of the drawbar will prevent exess drawbar support movement and will add lifespan to the seals.
if you use your lift with a tool that needs load control, you have to loosen the drawbar to allow the support fore aft movement.
there is a special bushing in the front of the support that should prevent up down movement and allow fore aft movement.from your desciption this bushing should be replaced.(not much to do with the seals though).

I put these in a 3010 not long ago anmy dealer said to ceck to see if there was any side to side movement and if there was ti put a large washer in between the wishbone shaped piece and the tractor housing. Mine did not leak afterwards.
