I have a styled JD A that my dad and I are starting to resore. We noticed that the fan had about a 1/4 of a turn of free play,so I took the cover off the governor above the flywheel and the gear behind the cover is very sloppy, but the gear is tight on the shaft.I can lift the drive gear at least a 1/4".I was just wandering if anyone out there could tell me what I need to do to fix it.Thank You

Rob, you can't measure the governor gear movement with the L/H cover removed. That cover has a bearing in it that supports the L/H side of the governor shaft, so without the cover on the housing that gear & shaft will move quite a bit. That cover also pushes the governor shaft to the right & that compresses a spring that maintains pressure on the R/H governor bearing.
~There are gaskets [shims] between that L/H cover & governor housing that control the fan drive gear position & backlash. There are also gaskets between the fan shaft rear bearing housing & the governor housing that control the fan driven gear depth & position.
~To properly adjust the fan shaft backlash you really need to remove the governor & fan shaft from the tractor, then adjust the fan bearing gasket stack & L/H governor bearing cover gasket thickness to have the heels [rear edge] of BOTH fan & fan drive gears even with each other & the gear backlash around .005"-.008" [used gears].
~If you want to trust that the gear depth is set correctly you could just remove a couple of shims from the L/H governor cover until you get the fan shaft backlash you want. If you do the adjustment without pulling the governor & the gears howl when the tractor is started, add a shim of two back in until the gears quiet down again.
~MAKE SURE you remove the magneto or distributor before re-installing that L/H governor cover or you risk breaking the mag or distributor housing if the drive slots aren't lined up when the cover is tightened up..... .
