The up/down play in the clutch drum is probably not a good thing but I'm guessing that it does not have anything to do with the whine. My 1953 model 50 has a lot of gear whine. Seems to be the 1st reduction gear. I hear it more under load, seems to be be in all gears. Don't hear it with the clutch engaged in neutral. Don't hear it as much going down hill.

I'm told this is fairly common. I believe the 1st reduction gear is straight cut making it more robust but subject to noise. I'd rather have noise than busted gears... I also look at it this way, with all that gear noise I don't hear the worn valve train as much!

there have been previous reports on this same condition and I agree with them...the noise is coming from wear between the reduction drive gear and the transmission (large) drive gear. It seems that the gear teeth tend to wear flat and this causes the noise. My neighor has a 530 with the same noise....high pitch whine on advanced throttle...I have 2 520's and a 530 and they have slight whine.
