'A' cam shaft loose...

I took out my governor shaft because my tractor was running eratic and I thought that maybe the governor was sticky. after I got the gov.shaft out of the gov. case I noticed the cam gear was loose on the cam shaft. I could move the gear side to side a little bit,so I took off the crank case cover and I could see that the 3 bolts were loose and unscrewed about a 1/4th inch!. I tightened them up as tight as I could with a wrench and rebent the washer. My question is, Can the cam gear slip on the cam shaft when the bolts are that loose? Or is the cam gear splined to the cam shaft? I got everything back togather and the tractor seems to run good. Thanks- morgan

Never worked on one of these so am just speculating. Since the cam gear is cut at an angle (helical gear?), the play in the loose gear as it moves on the end of the camshaft would tend to advance and retard the camshaft timing with the movement of the gear. Seems that this would cause erratic running. Or do I misunderstand something about this?

I have a 1948 A that that happened with. Started getting an engine knock, couldn't find it anywhere! Finally tore down engine and found one cam gear bolt loose.!! Lot of work for nothing!! What had happened is someone had put four bolts with nuts on them in there instead of cap screws or whatever is supposed to be in there, I have not to this day found out from anyone exactly what type bolts and locks are "supposed" to be used. Anyway, what had happened was one cam gear bolt had worked loose enough to allow the nut to strike the side of the crankcase, creating the knock. Impossible to see as when turned over at idle or slowly it did not knock so where to look? After I found it I removed the nuts, put lock washers under heads of the cap screws of the right size and tightened them up. No more knock and she has been running fine for two years now.

I don't think so.

The gear is attached to the camshaft via a stud and two bolts, so it can't rotate on the shaft.

I had one that broke the stud and bolts though !

Wasn't sure what year we were talking. Early ones used three studs and a locking plate, but the same rule applies.

Picture is for a late "A".

It's a 46 model- thanks -It had 2 bolts and a stud , with the tin washer that you bend over the bolts and the nut.
