JD 4010 engine oil leak

Anyone- There are 4 "weep" holes down low just above the oil pan on the left side of a 4010LP engine(When you are sitting in the seat). What is the purpose of these small holes? I have one that occasionally drips some oil through one of the holes. Is the block cracked? Is there a leaky head gasket? Is it normal? Help!!

Those holes are there to indicate that coolant is leaking past the top o-ring, as was previously stated. Usually the holes are plugged and you don't know your o-rings are leaking until coolant gets into the crankcase. The o-rings usually just deteriorate with age. If the liners are moving up and down sufficiently to cause them to "wear", you have major problems, and they're going to show up by more than leakage at the o-rings, such as blown head gaskets and compression leaking into the cooling system. There is a liner standout specification which determines how far above the deck the liner flange should be. Typically this should be .001" to .004". Deere engines are pretty good about not wearing the counterbores, and I've only come across one that required the liners to be shimmed up. The protrusion is there more for the sealing of the head gasket fire rings than to keep the liners from bouncing up and down. The bottom line is that your o-rings are not in the best shape, and should probably be replaced before they allow coolant into the oil, which will quickly damage the bearings and other parts in the engine. When you have the liners out to replace the o-rings or overhaul the engine, you can also check liner protrusion, but my guess is that it will be just fine.

Could be more to it than what you have received. The Sleeve has two o-rings, One above the weep hole to indicate water leaks and one below for the oil. Sometimes sleeves move up and down wearing the o-rings. If it has had new sleeves installed, shims should have been installed at the top of the sleeve between the sleeve lip and the block, so that the head holds the sleeve in place. Later engines had different o-rings.

Rob,the engine has orings on bottom of liners to seal coolant out of crankcase.If an oring is seeping a little fluid will come out of holes.Not a major problem unless coolant starts getting in crankcase then you will have to pull liners and install new orings.JD did away with weepholes on later engines.Jim B

seepage pretty normal on 4010 you can do like my dad pour some diesel fuel in radiator to soften orings some guys pluged holes thats a big no no

Jim B- Thanks for your commments. I will keep an eye on the oil for any coolant entering the crankcase. So it is possible to leak some oil without leaking antifreeze into the crankcase?
