i"m trying to run dad"s farm due to his stroke and work a public job(for my family) to keep them(mom and dad) some money coming in.he has a vermeer 605e baler that he has had a lot of trouble with. it has realitivly new belts(2 season"s) but has lots of teeth missing, bent mounting angles, missing finger guides. is this baler worth repairing.i have no faith in this machine,i just know that dad had a LOT of trouble with it and don"t know if it was operator or machine. don"t know what to do. been hiring hay baled but we all know about that.trying to keep my family going limits my shop time, farm time and BUDGET. try to bale 30 acres at least twice a year for cattle operation.updating equipment can"t really be afforded right now

The other guys must not ever have had to rely on a custom baler to give you that advice. If your custom balers are anything like those around here, you will end up with a bunch of rounds of junk hay, because they always bale yours last, after it"s been down on the ground 10 days, or rained on 3 times, or been 4 weeks too long standing, etc. 30 acres is tough to pay for a round baler with, but there are balers out there that might work. For 30 acres, a smaller baler like a Vermeer Rebel or a little Hesston or New Idea would be plenty. You"d have smaller bales, and therefore more of them, but it"d get done when you wanted/needed it done.

tim sounds as if you've been where i am i can't blame the guy he's gotta look after no 1 plus who knows what's in the future maybe i can grow it into a bigger operation dad had all he wanted for his age. what i want is a decent baler and maybe i can do a little baling also (the opportunity exists) got the tractors that'll handle it all might as well make'm earn their keep we do have to pay taxes on them too.just need to invest in some equipment hoping the vermeer would fit the bill but sounds as if it needs a new home.looked at older nh 865?? the one with the chains and bars last night ???

That model # doesn't sound quite right, but close. The chain balers have their place, they do well with rougher crops - anyone make cornstalk bales around you? They do tend to beat the leaves off of alfalfa, so in my area they kind of fell by the wayside as most do alfalfa for quality hay, anything else is extra baling. But, if you are dealing in grass hay & other course material they work well. The later models with the good tensioning system are better, make a tighter bale. If you do custom work, a hydraulic tensioner system makes a more desirable firm bale over the older spring-tensioning deals.

I bought a 605e in 1977 never did like it was not a good design. I agree with the others hire that hay baled, and if only 30 acres to bale don`t think you can afford to own a baler, that is not cost effective.Just my 2 bits:

The Vermeer 605E model baler is almost 30 years old. Given the age and the amount of parts you might have to replace it will be better for you to hire our the baling. From what you describe you may need to rebuild the pickup. In doing this you would spend close to the value of the baler.Even if you rebuilt the baler you still would have a 30 year old baler. The 20 year old 605 balers sell from $1,500-$3,500. 30 acres of hay will be around 100 bales so at current rates you could have the hay custom baled for around $10 per bale. If you spent that $1,000 on the 605E baler you still would have to do the work to bale the hay and may still have some problems learning to operate the 605E baler. Sell the baler in its current condition and update your equipment when you can.

Mr. hay dr THANKS so much for your reply was this a good baler or not? was dad's problems the baler or him. is this a cantankerous baler. kind of aggravated with hiring it done they have to get to it when they can don't blame them though it's the way it is. right now 1k don't sound bad and i'm not scared of work. but if the baler just a bad design that's another situation alltogether.

Vermeer balers were not real good until the F series on up. I series for 4 by 5 balers and J series for the 5 by 6 balers are much better. I don"t think the E balers were made too long and I agree with the other post about not spending money on it. If you are not too far from Laurens, SC there is a large Vermeer dealer there with a number of used balers. No, I dont"t have any connection with him other than being a customer.
Hope this helps.
