I recently bought a 400 cyclo planter 6 row with the hydraulic powered fan. I did not know until I looked that it has a 1000 pto pump. I am not sure if it is just an adapter on there or not. If I put a 540 adapter on there, would I have enough pressure for this type of planter? Maybe if I run tractor at high rpms. I'll have to order a manual to see what the proper pressure is. If not, Are these pto hydraulic pumps cheaply bought?

The 540 pump is significantly bigger and more expensive than the 1000 rpm version. As you can expect, it is roughly twice as big. You can rig up a couple of pulleys and Vee belt, similar to what is done with centrifugal sprayer pumps. Around here 1000 rpm pumps are reasonable and readily available, not so for 540 pumps. A new pump is well over $1000. I believe as the Cyclo's were scrapped, the 540 pumps were sold/used on smaller tractors to power other hyd attachments. Other than farmers, not many have tractors w/1000 rpm, so the 1000 rpm pumps were not as desirable.

Yep,

I just think it would be easier to go to a bone yard and buy that front snout off of a PTO shaft driven planter. Maybe even buy the whole darned planter for parts.

Since most of those trailer types were used with smaller tractors, the biggest share of 'em were set up for 540 anyway and the yards are full of 'em.

Two four row cyclo 400 sold today in south west Nebraska near McCook for less than $100 each. They were very rough, and one did not have the drum. It did have the plate to mount the drum which I will get in the mail to Allan.

Yes Sir, I hear that.

The only guys that like 'em are the guys that like 'em. :>)

Seems to me that I gave $7200 for my first 500 when new and all decked out with liqiud.

Bought this one last week for $200. Go figure.

I think you are on the right path if he wants to be thrifty. Up here the PTO cyclo's sell for scrap. Buy a PTO version, change over the hyd pump drive version to PTO drive, or take the good parts from the hyd machine and put on the PTO machine. I would do which is the least amount of work. Sell the reminder for scrap. However there is one caveat, you cannot turn as short with the PTO machine. Also, not everyone can turn wrenches as efficiently and effectively as you obviously can, based on what I have seen you post. The stuff sure does look good. He needs to ponder that issue before jumping in.

Yes Sir,

That's why I've always liked the old 500s; you can turn 'em on a dime. And like ya say, they sell for pennies.

Mornin' J,

They originally had two different pumps and you could get either one. I would imagine that IH can still get the other pump, but you know how they are. I doubt if it is going to be cheap.

I've only had the 1,000 speed, but can tell you even then, the tractor has to be wound up to get the proper air. In operation, you need between 8 and 11 oz of air pressure.

Hope this helps,

Allan

J,

Just got to thinking. You are talking about the pump that mounts directly to the tractor, right?

If you have the pump that is PTO shaft/pulley driven, you can just change out the drive pulley inside the cover housing. 540 takes the 12" pulley and the 1000 would have the little 6" pulley.

Just wondering, as "most" 400s (that I've been around) are PTO 'shaft' driven and don't have the external PTO pump at the tractor.

Allan
