I have owned both types and prefer the rear discharge one. It spreads the clippings more evenly than the side discharge type. Spend the extra money and get one made with a deck of heavy steel. It also needs 4 caster wheels and a center roller to reduce scalping. KEH

I found one (Woods brand) with 2 casters in the back and a roller across the front. I wonder how that would compare with the 4 caster models and center wheel.

Kerry, I would still go for the 4 caster wheels and a center roller. Woods is a good brand as far as I know, But some makers build cheaper models. If you are looking at used ones, check for rust, especially under the belt covers. On any of them, check for ease of lubrication. My Long mower has to have the belt guard removed to grease theblade shaft bearings(corrected on current models). Mine is heavy enough and has held up well. I have some rough lawn and a tendency to let the grass get too big.

Front corners can scalp. I thought I wanted one and shopped for a long time to find one. I was disappointed with my "lawnmowers" for their scalping and the setup mentioned seemed to solve the problems.

Was going to go with the rear discharge also cause the egress of the material is more open and doesn't have to move from blade to blade to get out, as mentioned more even discharge, and you can run either side up next to an obstacle and get a close cut.

I did not buy one as I wanted it for the pasture and decided the ground was too uneven for the small gauge tires.....the thing would be bouncing all over the place.
