New Idea Corn Picker - Lots of Questions

I have read a lot of posts here about NI corn pickers and I see them from time to time around my neck of the woods for sale - 1 or 2 row.

I have some questions about these things.

Was NI the 'king' of small corn pickers - I can't say I have ever heard of another brand for 1 or 2 row. When were these things made and what were some popular models? I assume one can't buy a new 1 or 2 row corn picker these days? Can one get parts/manuals for these old NI corn pickers? How did they attach to the tractor? How much HP did they require? Where did the picker dump the corn - on an attached trailer or on a trailer being pulled along side or truck?

I might consider a 1 row picker for a restoration project - but I'd like to know more about them first!

Thanks in advance,
Bill

i used a #7 n.i. the same model as my granfather. around here it was either new idea or wood bros. there was some a/c mounteds too. a lot depended on the dealers support and who liked who. also some minnies and olivers. i've seen a 2 row mounted massey and one row massey . my old school bus driver had a self propelled masey harris . i believe the top speed was about 10 mph on the road. i think the previous owner told me about custom picking in the cold winter with it and almost freeezing to death coming home at 10 mph on it. never did understand why most of them guys didnt make some sort of cab except pride maybe! lol . i used to love to see one neighbor coming over to open up fields or when he custom farmed them, the whole field on a m.m ZB with the new idea mounted picker and trailing husking bed. he had three box bed wagons with false endgates. those old farmers were characters!! not like a lot of the newer guys who are so afraid someone might be trying to take their farm out from under them.he also drove an old REO ton and a half truck.till he traded it in on a 1969 3/4 ton i-h step side.my grandfather would help him and others with our 1952 ford 8n and #7n.i. and big box ford/dearborn wagon. i'll shovel ear corn over shelled any day! loli've gotten more satisfaction and sense of well being , over that old green wagon with ear corn covering the floor of it, than of any money in the bank or insurance policy!

I'm not one to "wring my hands" over things which are inherently dangerous; most any thing can be dangerous under the right circumstances, but..... ..many folks walking around nick-named "Lefty" (maybe not really, but you get the idea) because they decided to unclog a picker with it still running

My late dad-in-law worked for many years in the New Idea factory at Coldwater, Ohio and was a big fan of their pickers. He'd get a gleem in his eye talking about the gravity wagons with high side extensions overflowing with earcorn. He built a huge drive through crib. I have beside me a newspaper clip of a factory close out ad of their pickers when they stopped production. Unfortunately there is no date, not sure when that was. Besides being slow by today's standards a disadvantage was there was lots of dust to breath at times. I also have a farm paper ad of Vermeer pickers from 1986. Vermeer made 4 row wide and 6 row 30" pull pickers. A fond memory of my young years was when a neighbor came and opened our fields with a self propelled Massey Harris picker, later another neighbor with a mounted New Idea.

1983 I think. Stitzel Farm Equipment, a used machinery jockey in Hamburg, PA, bought probably 20 323 1-rows, 20 325 2-row narrows, a few 324 2-row wide and 330 3-row narrow pickers and an assortment of husking beds and shellers for them when that closeout notice became public. I think he finally sold the last new 323 picker last year. Still has at least one new 329 sheller unit on the lot. Ever see one of Vermeer"s mounted corn harvesters? I"ve only seen pictures of a 4-row wide mounted on an IH 1086 that was modified so the operator faced the rear of the tractor while driving. The snapper was on the 3-point hitch of the tractor and a conveyor took the ears alongside the tractor to the husker or sheller that was mounted on the front of the tractor.

Other Brands were Oliver a 1 & 2 row. Woods brother made a 1 row. MM made a 2 row. Co-op made a 1 row, I had one of these. I H also built 1 & 2 Row pull types plus mounted pickers. Ferguson had one that was called a bell city or was made by bell city. These are the ones that I can recall . There could be others.

Kind of a blanket 'yes' to all the questions. :):)

Lots of other companies made pickers, but NI & JD made the last best ones. NI had a terrific husker; JD had a terrific header with stripper plates.

NI made mounted pickers that fit on the tractor - a large amount of time to mount & unmount. They also made 1 or 2 or 3 row pull type. Put in the pin, hook up the pto, & go picking.

One row is unseen in my part of the world - would take all day to get anything done. I see 1 row is real popular in other regions.

I'm not so good with model numbers, A6 was an old 2 row can't find much for parts; 300 was a newer better 2 row but not easy to get parts; 324/327 is the 'new' modular design which NI supports quite well yet for parts. (Did they quite production somewhere in the '80s?) Those are the 3 I have owned....

Some of the very old designs elevated out to the side, but most all elevate the ears out the back to a pulled wagon.

I just got a manual from Eby for my newest picker. NI does have many of them also I believe, for the newer models anyhow.

We pulled the 6A & 300 with a 36 hp IHC 300 and worked well with 100 bu wagons. I pulled the 300 & 324 with a 85 hp tractor & 200 bu wagons, probably a bit more than I need but works fine, some days it's nice to have, actually made it work this fall in heavy corn in the drizzle in peat ground, pulled the engine down - but I'm driving at a good clip, more than they suggest. Not sure what a 1 row would need, but the full wagon takes the power & traction...

Pulled a Belle City 1 row and a 60 bu wagon with a TE-20 Ferguson and sometimes the F12 Famall. F12 had more traction but less power. Replaced the Belle City with a 1 row Woods Bros. picker. Replaced the 60 bu.wagon with a 100 bu wagon and the Te-20 with a Ford 850. Also had a TO-30 by this time. Dont recall any serious problems with the pickers other then the husking rollers. We then decided to put up a grain bin and have the corn custom harvested with a combine.

My dad & uncle picked corn together for years - both farms, dad ran the picker 95% of the time. A mounted 2 row ME on a F-20 hand crank. I wonder how many thousand acres dad covered with that rig over the years? Talk about no frills. :) Uncle had the loader tractor with a hoist on the back, each owned the barge box. Wife helped at the elevator into the crib, & us kids were the pin pullers & setters. :)
