I bought a 9 ft New Idea Cut/ditioner with the blades worn out, no question. I only have about 5 acreas of mixed grass to cut. I tried it out and my D17 was way over matched. I was planning on replacing all 40 blades to keep the balance but only cut a 6-7 ft swath after the first pass around the field. My question is will new blades make it cut easier, requiring less HP, enough to be able to use my D17 or Ford 4000. Years ago I had a 7 ft cut/ditioner with new blades and was able to cut the fields with the same tractor. Right now I have very little invested in the 279 but new blades will cost over $400. I would like some ideas if new blades will be enough to make it simi usable or is it just too much for my HP range.

I talked to an exdealer about a nine ft 297 and he recommened at least a 70 horse tractor.

I have a NI279 Cut-ditioner too. It makes my JD3020 gasser do some talking, but behind the 1850 Oliver you just know you are dragging something around. I think the NI279 owners manual talks about sharpening the flails/knives. So, my question is, are the flails/knives worn back so much a touch with a hand grinder wouldn't work? I don't think they were intended to have a 'butcher knife sharp' edge as I recall in the owners manual.

Tom, There is no sharpening to these. They are suppose be shapped like a L. The blade/cutter is is worn right to the bend. They are worn and now resemble an I not a L. If it was a 7ft cut I would reblade it. Looks like it will be going to the spring consignment sale. I am not buying a bigger tractor.

We have a 7 foot model of this that we run with a D17 and it's just enough power. Cutting at night the exhaust is carrying a flame about 8 inches high. Good luck.

Check out a new Sickle instead of replacing them all. But if it's still cutting fine on worn sections I wouldn't bother replacing them.

A Cut/Ditioner is a flail-type mower, no sickle sections involved.

My bad. I Have a NI 291, couldn't remember if the side said mow-ditioner or cut-ditioner. guess it says mow-ditioner. Just brought it out for the 1st time this year tonight and snapped the pitman due to a 1/2 @ss repair by the last owner. We have an Identical Ford 535 in back that the frame ripped in 1/2 a while back that we use for parts.

Those mowers take a ton of HP, but are durable and take almost no maintence. I dont know the horsepower of a D17 but I know with my thick grass I wouldnt want to pull it with anything less than about 45 HP. We pulled it with a very worn 656 Hydro and the mower is too much.

According to people I have asked around here the D17 does not have enough HP.
