Any info on on a 455 N.H. pull type sickle mower.
Current prices, reliability, are they good for mowing hay on a small scale. 15 acres or less? It has a P.T.O hook up and hitch in the rear to attach a conditioner. Does it work well?

John,
We used that mower and a New Idea conditioner all thru the sixtey's and into the seventy's until we bought a NH 9 ft haybine. We could lay the sickle over and condition the back round of hay when we opened the field. We made between 15,000 to 25,000 bale a year back then. Dad believed in keeping idle teenage hands busy! Ha Ha !

I found mine at a local N.H. dealer while looking for some baler parts. I had been looking at used haybines but were wore out and still command a pretty good price. I have heard great things about disc mowers but again bring a pretty good price. I thought I better jump on it. Hope it was the right choice. I have alfalfa seeded in wheat that will need cut in late Aug.or early Sept. I'll see then.

I have had a seven foot 455 for about 10 years and cut about 25 acres per year with it. I have had no mechanical trouble other than one knife breaking from metal fatigue. As long as the knife sections and guards are sharp and in good shape you should find it satisfactory. The pitmanless drive is far better than my former mower with a pitman for cutting on slopes or where the knife may jam up in wet grass--the belt slips instead of the pitman breaking.

I now have a haybine for my bigger fields, which I like far better than any mower where the fields are flat and big enough to use it. But I still use the 455 in confined places or where there may be rocks or other obstructions. Like all sickle mowers, it wants the grass to be dry with no gopher mounds or clods of dirt. I think it is at least as good as any other sickle mower.
