I just picked up a John Deere Hay Fluffer. It is a model #2. Does anyone have any idea how old it is, or what it's worth?

I'm cutting hay with a sickle bar mower, and I figure if I fluff it before I rake it, I might save a day's worth of drying time. Am I correct?

Thanks!!

My grandfather had one. Wasn't worth a hoot in 1st cut timothy. You had to pull it as fast as you dared to get it to do anything, and it still wouldn't do the job right. Spent more time untangling the thing than fluffing hay with it. When they come up at auction around here, they usually don't get a bid. Ours is still sitting in the fencerow.

Thanks guys!! I sure am glad I only paid $25 for it. I'll still give it a try, but now I know what to expect.

Does anyone know how old it is?

We have a #2 fluffer. It works best to fluff hay in the morning just as the dew is coming off. If you try to use it when hay is dry, won't work very well. Normally run 8 mph or fast speed that field will allow. We have used it on alfalfa, orchardgrass, etc. Not made to fluff hay that has been raked. They came out in 1959 and were made till about 1963 I am thinking. The #3 with a hand crank was made from 1964-1966. There were lots of them sold here in EC IN-WC OH. Used to see several a year at sales. Last one I saw sell was 2 years ago @ $225.00. Newer tedders probably are better, but sounds like you got a deal on yours.
