How hot does a dark color steel roof get

I'm getting ready to build a pole building and have a question about the roof. I like the looks of the building that I see with either evergreen or red roofs but how hot do they get in the middle of the summer. As a practical issue would it be better to go with a light color roof. The building is going to be 12' high if that makes a difference. Thanks.

Phil,
The surface temperature would probably be in the area of 130-140 degrees F- Black rubber roof surface temperatures on commercial and industrial facilities get into this temperature range. Since it is metal, it will radiate the heat into the building. The only way to cut the radiant heat down is to place a barrier between the roof and the inside. There are some products on the market to do just this. I cannot think of the names though.

i was painting the outside of my metal corn crib one summer. i was painting it white. just to see i went in there after a while. reguardless of wether the paint was wet or dry it felt about 20 degrees or more cooler on the white painted part as opposed to the rusted part.one of the main reasons for painting grain bins and fuel tanks that sit in the sun white.

Here is a basic primer in light and color.

If you see a color it is because that color is not absorbed by the object and it is reflected.

Black has no color and absorbs all light

White has every color and reflects all light

Reflective (shiny) rejects all light

A major component of heat is infrared light. Black absorbs it all and mirrors reflect most all of it. Now heat will build up in any structure that is not well ventilated and is tightly enclosed, thus all cars sitting in the sun heat up. But alot of that heat comes from the glass allowing all IR in and not having ventilation. Heat will build up next to a metal roof with all colors because of the thermal coefficient of metal and its ability to transfer heat from one side to the other. Anyone that owns a vehicle painted black knows it is hotter than one painted white but they both are hot when you come out in the afternoon to go home. A simple experiment is to put a thermometer in the trunk of a black car and then place the same thermometer in the truck of a white car. You will see a difference but both will be hotter than the outside temp because of thermal transfer.

In summary ventilation is the most important factor in design but a dark colored roof will get hotter than a light colored roof. A fact based on simple physics.

Researchers at the U.S. Dept. of energy found that even white absorbs most of the solar radiation that hits them. On a 55 degree day white roofs can reach 118 degrees. Red peaked at 106 degrees. So just pick a color you like.

Color doesn't really make that much difference - white, alluminum, dark brown - if it gets good sun figure 20-25 degrees over the ambient temperature. You can get good quality metal roof with a 50 year guarantee on the paint for about $0.50 a square foot. My parents put a metal roof on their house - 27 years old and has required no maintenance despite sun, rain, snow, and volcanic ash.

I would really take the time to study the cost of a painted roof. Find out the life expectancy of the coating and just what the warranty covers. A painted roof will chalk up after a few years and in 20 or so be all rust. Failure to properly maintain it will void the warranty. I am sure that it can be repainted if necessary. But striping, priming, and painting would be expensive (probably cheaper to replace) and will have to be done before the on set of rust. Otherwise you will be up there with a wire wheel trying to get all the rust off. I opt'd for a Galvanized roof. Bout every 5 years or so, curtsey wash and paint with alumni coat cost 50 bucks and should last my life time.

FYI - A friend of mine bought a place with a painted roof on the barn (40x60). It was built in the mid 80s, 4/12 pitch. We crawled up there to chase down an electrical problem with an outdoor light, There wasn't a speck of paint on it, go'na cost him 2 grand to replace it.

It doesnt make much differance in the coloras far as heat goes, does make adifferance in quality of steel and quality of paint.I put up a shed in 73 and used white painted steel, good stuff, still looks real good. A little primer showing through on roof, will have to repaint soon. Would diffinitely do again with good steel.

Phil: Green is cooler. Lighter is better. Well, all plants seem to use green color for leaves. Gotta be a temperature reason that green works best with sunshine, besides maintaining life? I'd still go with grey if you want coolest. Depends some on your location too. G

Just a note. The Plants reflect the green light. Thats why you see green. They use the other colors. LOL

How is only one color reflected?

oldIHcre: Explain the science involved in a plant leaf reflecting one specific color and not all other colors? You seem to think you know so can you explain the answer in depth or are all your answers shallow? G.

I'm in SE PA, almost in Maryland. The summers get very hot and humid. I like the looks of the darker color roofs but I am concerned about how much heat they would add to the inside, especially when we are stacking 1000 bales of hay in the middle of July and August.

Go for white or aluminum color if possible!
