The No. 5 was a tractor-mounted ,PTO driven mower. The No. 4 would be the last of the horse drawn mowers. I could have rubber tires as they were an option ( at least with IH ) at that time. Many of the cutter parts are available through John Deere as they didn't change those parts simply because the No. 5 ,and later, mowers were tractor mounted. If you find that you have a No.4 , you can probably get an owners manual through "The Small Farmers Journal". I bought reproduction manuals for my IH No.6 and No. 9 mowers through them and they are only about 6 dollars each. If yours is horse drawn ,look at the tool box cover and it should have the No. cast on it. I have a No. 3 JD mower and the No. 3 is cast into this cover. John

Michael,

I get most of my parts from a Amish down the road from me. He makes the outside grass board and pitmans in his shop and is able to order in most of the wear parts. (Sickles, guards, knives, ect.) Granted, they don't have the pretty green paint but they work just as good. He is also very fair in his prices. If you like, you can send me a e-mail of what you are looking for and I can pass it on to him or you can contact him at:

I'm in the process of scanning my #4 manual to post on a web site I'm building. What area of the mower are you needing parts for? I'll do my best to e-mail you the pages you need.

As far as I know, the #4 was the last of the horse drawn mowers made by John Deere before they went to the #5 caster wheel tractor mount mower. Sorry but I don't know what years Deere made the #4 and Big 4 mower.

Hope the above information helps you out.

I beleive my mower must be a #5 because it has rubber wheels. I'll check closely and get back.

Michael,

The Big 4 had a option for rubber tires as well as options to make it drawn by a tractor. I have scanned a couple of pictures so you can see if this is the type of mower you have. Click on the link below to view them.

The top picture is of the Big 4 with a short pole and a quick turn tongue truck and at the bottom of the second picture shows the Big 4 mounted on rubber and set up for use with a tractor.

Hope this information helps,

Old Iron

What a great resource this bulletin board is. I have a number 4 and the scanned pictures were great! It shows my cutter with the rubber tires. Now I'll get the manual. Thanks

Michael,

Want to sell the #4 that you have on rubber or do some trading? I have a extra #4 with iron wheels in working condition I'm willing to trade plus ???? Please contact me either way by e-mail.
