I was bending points an awfully lot with my Oliver 2 bottom 12 inch plow and after putting the points in the press and getting them straight they kept getting weaker. Went to a farm store and I saw where they had some 14in. points with the same bolt pattern and same width and and height and everything except longer. I went ahead and bought the 12in. ones but could I convert to the 14in simply by putting 14in points on? That would be a lot better if I can but I don't know...? Thanks!

On John Deere the same complete bottom was used on both the 12" & 14" frames, just a slightly longer share, Oliver a 14" moldboard fits a plow that is adjustable frame 12", 14", or 16" bottoms, set for 16" would use the 16" and set for 14" use the 14", do not know if the 12" was same or not

the points will work but to cure your problem you need to weld the frog up on the tip it must be wore too far back

I used to have an oliver 2x-12" trailer plow with the breakaway clevis and hyd. lift. It used a 2 bolt-12' plow point. I found you could buy a 14'" or 16" point and cut it off with a torch and the first 2 holes lined up to bolt on- it was a special order for 12" points and about 3 times as much apiece. You should have a breakaway clamp on the hyd. fittings on your tractor to prevent taring things apart when the plow comes loose on a rock. The old oliver plow was an excellent easy pulling plow when hitched right.. The other posts are correct, bigger points alone wont make a bigger plow, you would need to change moldboards and distance between plow beams as a minimum to make it have more capacity.

I lay the old 12" share on the 14 and clip it off with the torch. Running the 14" point just gives you a full cut share.

Yep, you can just bolt the 14" shares on, but that won't help the point bending. Your plow should have a trip in the hitch that helps (not prevents) the damage you are getting and I'll bet it is rusted fast or has been set up real tight so it doesn't trip easily. If you are plowing faster than about 4mph, nothing short of trip beams will prevent damage from rocks

Hey Thanks! Thats pretty neat so now I can have a 14'' plow. I found out the hardway about that hitch and how it comes unhooked when you hit a rock. Here I was going down the field and all of a sudden I see this hydraulic line flying by my eyes and looked back and there the plow was unhooked right in the ground about 10 feet back. Stripped my pipe fitting and stuff clean out. Oh well, it could have been worse. I like that 14'' idea. The only thing I didnt know was if the piece that supports the point would be able to support the extra load. Thanks!

Didn't think about you having a hydraulic lift plow. They used to make a release gadget that attached to the quick coupler. Look on some old tractors in a junk yard and you will find one. They attached to the tractor via the sleeve that releases the coupling so just a pull on the hose realses it.

As Jerry said, you won't have a bigger plow. It will cut tough sod & roots, like Alfalfa, a lot better tho with 14" shares. Really the extra 2" will just be scraping open air most of the time behind the bottom in front of it. You'll be better off, but not plowing any more. :)

You won't have 14 inch plows other than the first one. The distance between the plows have not changed. The first one will cut 2" more but that is all. The other plows are still the same distance apart and will cut the same amount of land. I do put the bigger points on because with the Fords it helps wear on the moldboard.
