A buddy of mine has a 14 acre field that he needs plowed. I got a oliver 100(?) 2 bottom trailer plow to pull with a Farmall H and he's supposed to be getting a manual trailer plow for his Oliver 77. I have only plowed gardens and stuff so it will be a learning experience plowing a field and fun! Anybody have any suggestions about how we should go about doing it? This fields hasn't been plowed in several years but they've kept a crop in it all the time. We just want to go out and have some real fun! Thanks! I wanna hear that H bark.

i never got the chance to use a trailor plow but done my share with a jd f140h 4-16 anda 3020. we plowed a millon acers with that set up every fall and spring. i sure had a lotta fun then, now we just use a chisel plow and disk. i remember one time i put a straight pipe on the 3020 and plowed 'til late that nite with a flame jumping the whole time. also used a d17...didnt take long to get the muffler red hot on a 3-16 with it.

I've got a '48 John Deere GW and a #55 3-14 hydraulic plow and let me tell you, running this rig is pure joy! The tractor is pure stock and it really "get's with it plowing". A while back I gutted the muffler because it sounded a little "stuffed up" and now you can hear that old John bark. The plow is worn and a little loose, but I got it set up right and it does a nice job. You learn to set sideways to watch the plow and to keep your right knee away from that clutch lever if you bump into a "Michigan Marble". Yeah, I've got the spring hitch with clutch pull out set-up and all. I have run a lot of plowing rigs and enjoyed "em all. Nicest rig was my uncle's Super MTA and a John Deere hydraulic 3-16 plow.
Worst one was an unstyled John Deere B and a "rope pull" 1-16 plow, I had the front wheels in the furrow half the time.

Plan is to have fun, right?- Ask an "oldster" to
help you lay off the lands, take some tools, some
extra gas and water, a picnic lunch, and a video
camera (even if you have to borrow one) You'll
have a buncha fun watching that tape when the snow
flies. Make sure to get some close-ups and make
sure the sound is working. Have a ball !!! rick

Sounds like a lot of fun. Our neighbor has 30 acres of beans that he lets us use our old tractors and plows on each fall. Dad and I try and get each of the tractors in our collection to the site and do a little plowing. (Haven't gotten them all there yet!) The small tractors like yours are actually the most interesting. You can really tell when you have the plow set-up with the correct draft. The hitch holes are the most interesting to set correctly. When you get the plow set correctly for the little tractors (A, C, H, MH22, etc.) you can run a gear higher! The bigger tractors (SMTA, W9, WD9, MH55, MH444) just pull the plows no matter what!
I find this much more fun than just showing the tractors.

Suggestions? Don't hurry. Bring snacks and take breaks when you get fatigued. When we did this first we worked harder than the tractors!

Have fun!

I'm in the same boat as I'm in the midst of ploughing about 12 acres with a IH 2-12 ace bottom trailer plough on steel and an FE35. Whole trick with those old ploughs is to take your time as it'll ride over any big stones or will at least stop the tractor or trip the hitch. Too fast will break a point and here in eastern Ontario They're 48 bucks a piece. Use baler twine for a trip rope. Good luck

Yeah, my place is mostly in hay, and my 2-bottom is mostly confined to garden jobs, I'd love to have some farmer ask me to turn over his medium size patch just to excersize the outfit and really scower those moldboards.

the correct spelling for cleaning the moldboards is "scour".

Don't pay much attention to these guy's. I feel the same as you. I would love to be turned loose in any field in and around 14 acre's with my 2 bottom plow. Its the experience of what it was like in my grandads day. Have fun.

14 acre field + 2 bottom plow = sore back, neck, arms, and butt.

Please, PLEASE! take before and after pictures of yourself! The doctor and chiropractor will need to see them.

What a wuss. Dad plowed most of 100 acres with a 3-14 and a Super W6 every spring for years. Of course this was in the 50's and 60's when you though you were in high cotton if you had hydraulics, much less a cab or power steering...

F-14, yep, you're right, I grew up thinking the proper way to sit a tractor was looking over my right shoulder, with my right hand reaching back for the trip rope. steering wheel spinner in my left hand, and foot ready for the brake to change direction. When plowing a bigger field, bigger than a garden, be mindful to use your adjusting levers to get a nice even plowing job, the rear moldboard seemed to want to ride high, made for a terrible plowing job. If your plow has a stone hitch and you have stone in the field,, PLEASE dont tie the trip rope around your waist..

Instead of tying the trip rope to the tractor, tie the end of the rope onto a piece of wire about 8" long which you can hook over some convenient tractor part.
Then if the hitch trips, the wire loop will straighten and release the rope from the trac

My Grandpa did that when he got his first Titan back like in the 19teens someplace. He had a h*ll of a time to get the knot open and catch the tractor before it got across the line fence which was made with stone. Guess he said a lot of choice words while you was a running. Guess he didn't have a tractor in Germany.. After that trip, he just sat on the rope..

we had a pin like a three point pin we tied rope to and it would pull out if tripped. when in highschool I plowed every night after school and liked in dark with no lights and the exhaust pipe red and throwing a flame hard on ears those straight pipes
