I am looking for a chart to tell me which planter plate to use for med. flat, large round etc. seed corn. I know this used to be on a seed corn sack and the dealer also had a chart to tell which plate to use for which planter etc. I have a #56 IH planter and a bunch of plates but don't know which plate is for what size corn.
Any help would be appreciated!.

Jim,
1. You start with contacting a seed dealer. Ask him if he has a chart showing which plates are needed for the various sizes of kernels. If he does not know, go to another dealer. You should take your plates (if you have any) with you. A dealer who knows these details, or is willing to find out, is also the one you want to buy seed from; he can be a wealth of information for you thru the years.
2. You and the dealer need to determine whether your plates are 16 cell or 24 cell. This is important. Do not ignore this detail. Do not mix 16 & 24 cell plates on the same planter. 3. The charts are of immense help. 4. Today"s plates are plastic. In your lifetime you will not plant enough acres to ever wear them out, unless you are planting 200-300 acres per row, per year. If they do get worn, buy another plate...they are of little expense. If you look at them thoroughly while comparing to a new plate, you will see the wear spots. Throw worn plates in the garbage...good plates save you a ton of money. Do not install plates that are "good enough"...they will never be that.
Plastic plates are different colors for each different size.
5. You should own an operator"s manual for your planter. If not, get one. Trying to figure out the sprocket settings, planting depth, etc. is like driving blindfolded. The planter is the most important machine you will have...without a proper stand of corn, the best combine in the world cannot correct or improve the yield.
6. If your dealer does not have the plates you need, contact Lincoln Ag, ph 402-464-6367. They are good people to deal with(No, I"m not related to any of them).
6. I am glad to be of further help, if needed. I was in the seed business with a major company for over 25 years, starting in the years when plateless planters first came onto the scene.

I have a similar problem; bought an old JD planter today but am just planting a small area (but bigger than I want to plant by hand). I have ordered Reid Yellow Dent seed from Shumway Seed Co online (but less than a bag) so I'll never see the bag I'm sure.

Any idea what cell size to order from Lincoln? I got no plates with the planter.

Thanks!

Lew, Ask that seed supplier for plate info for your seed. If they don"t have any info, then it can be a problem.

Then you need to know if your planter is set up for either 16 or 24 cell plates (look in seed hopper, are there plates in there?) If you can"t determine that info, you really need to get an owner"s manual or you will severely overplant or underplant with wrong cell-count plates.

Email me your info and then I can help you with plate selection.

Go to your dealer and ask him He should know what plates the seed he sold you take,. If not, he should be able to call his supplier and they should know

Find a new dealer. This is a DUH question! Not your fault that you do not have a planter that plants plateless seed! The op manual of any plate planter would never tell you which plates you need- (that is the duh part- the manual does not know which seed you might buy!) -that should be on the bag of whatever NON-PLATELESS seed you bought! Help- yes- try to fit the seed into the cavity of the plate....but the problem occurs when the plate chips off part of the seed, so that is why it is a judgment call when you evaluate how the seed fits into the cell.

Like I said on the other board, just bet it's gonna take a flat 5.

If you want to double check, lay one of each of the plates on a flat table and then size to a handful of your seed.

Would someone give us a simple, detailed instruction on sizing seed to plate? I'm always embarassed to ask, but I really don't know what I'm looking for when I lay them out & try, just find what works & hope for the best if it's not on the bag. Thanks.

Operaters manual would probably have this info if you can find one, seed corn bags used to have this info to don't know if they still do. Lee
