I use a Glencoe 4500 on soil saved ground and it works great. The Deere is a better unit still my next one will be a 726.

Our main reasoning for this is we like a real firm seed bed to plant into and it seems to allow us better control for seed depth. Typically we plant/spray (7200 Deere) right behind this final pass. Our soil in northern Indiana varies greatly and we plant into everything from sand to clay based soils and our seed depth really remains consistant in doing this. Maybe our thinging is all wet but we have seen yields and stalk standability improve. We have about 150 acres that is nothing but corn on corn. Its very hilly and full of rocks, but it yield decent with corn (140-160 bu). The only disadvantage is it does take a bunch of horsepower to pull this rig.

I agree with Ken, it'll work good if you did a decent job of stalk chopping last fall. I've owned a 724 for a few years now and it does a nice job of tillage along with those front disks sizing down the trash. In heavy trash I've had to do a second pass occasionally but that machine is designed to be a one pass system. Would be a good idea to have trash whippers on your planter too. Steve

We follow a disk chisel with a 30 ft John Deere 726 disc finisher and brillion x fold packer in corn on corn ground with little trouble as long as the surface residue isn"t all stalks. It leaves a great firm seed bed to plant in to. We let the disc unit goes as deep as possible and set the shovels about 5 inches deep.
