Ready to run my new 4 bottom semi-mount after getting everything greased and freed up.

This is a big upgrade from my 2-16 3 pt. Near ran a semi mount so this is all new to me.

Need to know if you raise and lower the plow with the 3 pt while using the cylinder. I'm figuring you do. Then just set the position control to drop the plow at the depth I want while dumping the cylinder back down??

Do you drop the cylinder completely then adjust the 3 pt to get the plow level?? Or do I need stops on the cylinder??

Any pointers would help. Pulling with an AC 7000, front and rear weights and chloride, so should HP and traction should be OK.

Thanks in advance,
Rick

Once I have the tail wheeel set with the cylinder, I try not to touch it while I'm plowing. I just raise and lower with the 3pt. arms. It doesn't have to be perfectly square when you go in or come out because you still gotta plow the headlands.

A model 145, right? No stops needed with the cylinder up front. The spring is supposed to deal with it.

Paul,
Couldn't find a model number anywhere. Yes, the cylinder is up front and has the long spring in back.

In their day, JD sold a gazillion of the 145's. Some 3, some 5, most 4 bottom, 14 or 16 inch. The beam is 2 big channel irons welded together to make a box beam.

They suc in cornstalks not enough clearence, I used one for 10 years or more, but a pretty good plow.

Put the front down as you enter the furrow, put the back down next, plow to the end, pull up the front, pull up the back next, and repeat. The first time go deeper with the front, after that set your 3pt stop to lower the front so it is level, and plow on. Take you 3 rounds to get the hangf of it, & you'll be an expert.

Thanks for all the tips. As soon as it dries back up I'll be out plowing.

Thanks,
Rick

The thing about no stops on the cylinder is when you
drop the rear of the plow, the depth stops on the cylinder keep the cylinder from raising the rear wheel so high that when you get to the end of the furrow, and raise the rear of the plow, there is a
delay while the cylinder extends to where the wheel
is stopped mechanically I would use the depth stops
on the cylinder if the delay is very much.

no stops on the cylinder, there is a setscrew/bolt to adjust the rear of the plow. the three point basicly controls the depth of the plow and the rear follows along. When the tractor comes up out of the furrow the plow raises up too.
Watch out for the front of the tractor to come up as it will run the plow on down deeper causing the front to raise farther etc

I used to pull a JD 4-14 semi-mounted with an 856 Farmall. I could run in low 4th at 4 1/2 mph. You'll get the hang of the lift levers.

When I first started using it, I kept hearing a grunting noise in the back of the tractor. I finally figured out it was the depth control on the lift arms moving up and down on uneven ground to maintain the depth of the plow.

Going into the furrow, drop your 3 point and then your cylinder. Coming out of the furrow, lift the 3 point and then the cylinder. You have to go kinda quick from one lever to the other, depending on how fast your going. Takes a little practice but you'll get the hang of it.

You can make perfectly square furrow ends by dropping the 3 point first and then drop the tail wheel. Reverse the procedure when raising the plow at the other end. There should be an adjustable depth stop on the tail wheel ,so drop the cylinder completely down. The stop should be set so the rear landside lightly marks the furrow bottom.
