Just replaced a hydraulic line on my Farmhand Accumulator but can't remember if I should use Tractor Hydraulic fluid or 30 weight oil. My self propelled New Holland uses 30 weight oil for the bale pressure and variable speed control. I believe there is more flow in the accumulator and I recall something about foaming if you use the wrong fluid.

I finally found my Farmhand Accumulator books, and it agrees that I should use a hydraulic fluid, however it doesn't tell me what viscosity or weight. It simply says use Farmhand Hydraulic Fluid. Anybody know what that is? Costco sells a hydraulic oil AW 46. Murdock sells hydraulic fluid in different weights, i.e. 15, 20, 30.(Of course more expensive?). Any help? Got the accumulator all back together so just need the proper fluid. I noted a question about the use of a Hay Hand Accumulator. Noted also it was posted in 2003. However, for the record I am semi-retired so raise limited hay mostly for back country and private horsepeople. The 8 pac isn't terribly fast but a whole lot easier than handling by hand. My kids are on to bigger and better things so I generally do the whole thing myself. At over 70, I find this a whole lot easier than side stacked bale wagon stacks (Which I did for awhile) or hand. (That's also why I asked about flat loading, string down, bale wagons which I thought were in Oregon, not New Holland.) I can load 8 packs easily on trailers, pickups, anything that isn't covered.
On the big ranch as a kid I would have loved the round bales for our beef herd out of Missoula. But for personal use, not too practical.

Ours had a tractor driven PTO pump with hyd. reservoir mounted on the baler. We used hydraulic fluid in the system. Same with the F-11 loader with the grapple.

Do you remember what weight hydraulic oil the accumulator used?
Thanks, Dick

Thanks. My accumulator runs off a a pump on my New Holland baler self propelled flywheel shaft. Seems to work good. The hydraulic oils have it. Dick

We used to use oil in hydraulics where they first started cause that was all we had. Later hdraulic oil was developed. One of the reasons was to stop foaming. I am going to stick my neck out here and say that hydraulic oil is better in all hydraulic applications. The reason the books call for oil is that hydraulic oil did not exsist then. Course you might need to find the right weight. Now all you people go ahead and yell at me and say "the book says" . Kenny in Colorado

Thanks. I assume I would use "Tractor Fluid" not sure if that gives me a choice on "weight". I hadn't noticed any weight difference on that except when I go for gear oil, which is thicker. When you said that about weight I wasn't sure if you were referring to engine oil or tractor fluid? Guess I'll have to check that out, I think the thicker worked better on the accumulator pump but it's been so long since I needed to add oil I wasn't sure. By the way, I thought I saw a bale wagon in Oregon that stacks the bales string down instead of strings on the side as the New Holland does? That would make my life easier and my neighbor. I could use my Hay Hand on that without changes (Single hooks.)
Thanks, Dick
