I was wondering if any one has any information on the old FORD mower conditioners from the 1960"s and 70"s? Were they any good? What are they worth? Can parts still be found for them? Any points of concern to check if looking at one? I have found some info that indicates that FORD contracted some of their equipment production to other manufacturers. Does any one now how much interchange there was between the builders machines and the FORD units? I have found a few machines in my area and was wondering if they are a usable unit. I have only few acres to deal with, and the ability to fix just about anything. High production is not a major concern.
Any information would be of interest. Thanks for listening.

I have some teeth for a ford mower conditioner that we ran once. I don't think we cut over 5 acres with it because it stayed broke. Alll I can remember was it was 7 foot and it was back around 1979.

I was messing around on ebay and found this listing. This is the same machine we have now and use for a swamp cutter, but the parts machine out back is painted blue and was sold as a Ford. Not very common in our area, but if I drive about 1 hr. south there is a bone yard that (atleast used to) has about 5-8 of these machines sitting there, in either NI or Ford colors. Ours is a really special one- it's got all 5 colors!!

If you find a Ford 535, it's the exact same thing as the New Idea 290. We had one, and then the frame broke so we used it for parts on a NI we picked up cheap. Cuts pretty good when the reel is adjusted properly, and it's a 9' cut.

Ford then went to Owatonna but I heard that then the reel was smaller and faster so taller grass would just wrap right around the reel.

The 535 should be a early to late 60's machine.

Been decades since I messed with a ford MOCO but I can say the one I did mess with way back when was a pain in the butt and was brakeing down all the time. Now as to why it did that I don't know it may have been wore out or just junk from the get go but it was a pain. But that was also back when I was 18 or so and I did all the wrench work in the hay filed for the guy I worked for and he was cheap

I won't be much help on the mechanical aspect of them, I do remember my father working on these when I was a lot younger, we had 2 of them. I recall springs, belts, guides and other miscellaneous items being replaced. Not sure who manufactured them.

From what I recall, they did seem to perform well on the 60 or so acres of hay and or alfalfa we baled annually. Only reason we had them was because we owned a ford dealership at the time, was not too much trouble to hit up the parts dept if something broke. If only that 532 baler was as reliable, from what I recall. The mower did cut well, 4000 tractor and mower was stuck once, our neighbor the farmer came over and pulled er out, as my father ran out of time had to go to work, he also cut the remainder of the field, and surprisingly remarked at how well it cut, he was a dairy farmer, was doing up to 20,000 small squares back then. Largest field we did then was 20 acres, and it sure seemed to mow reliably for what we did.

Matter of opinion here, for a few acres, should be fine, that is if they are in working order and or you can still source parts, be nice if parts can be cross referenced with NH or other manufacturers.
