I have an old John Deere sickle mower with a 7 foot sickle. I"m needing some parts and my John Deere dealer tells me he can"t get them. He tried to cross reference some of the casting part numbers and tells me that it must be a model 5 although I can"t find a plate anywhere verifying that. The casting number on the gear box is Z1051-H-+. I do not need that part but someone on here might be able to verify the model number for me from that number. What I am needing is 2 pittman arms and a plate that goes on the back of the gearbox that covers the bearing at the end of the drive shaft. The casting number on this plate is Z976-H. I"m also needing one hold down on the sickle bar and 2 guards for sickle bar. Everything else seems to be ok for now. I know I"m going to need the sickle teeth but I believe I can get them locally at a farm supply store. Can anyone on here help with parts for this mower? My hay will be ready to cut soon and I need to get this thing operational before then. Thanks in advance for any information about this mower and/or any of the parts I need.

The two parts that you described are for a #5 power mower.

Check the YT classified ads for Kansas. There is a gentleman named David Kratzer from Geneseo, KS.

He has provided many parts for both my #5 mowers at very reasonable prices.

The wooden pitman, knife sections, knife clips, and rock guards can be purchased at Tractor Supply.

Hope this helps.

Your partsman is lazy! in reply to tycteach, 06-19-2007 19:29:23
HOPEFULLY, someone will respond with an offer of a used bearing cover, if not, Depot parts, in Chilton, WI, has 3 of the Z976H covers ON HAND. They won't sell direct to you, but 'most all Deere dealers are set up to order from them, IF the WANT to HELP you.

You can go to their site, linked below, choose "GO TO PARTS ONLINE, then log in as "I Am NOT a Dealer", and check that part number. Enter it as I've posted it. You can call the Parts Depot to find out their nearest outlet in your area, IF your dealer doesn't deal with them.

The guards are INTERCHANGEABLE between most ALL DEERE mowers. If they can't exactly match what you have, there's ALL SORTS of currently available guards that will fit, and function right alongside the other guards, even though they MAY LOOK a bit different. Farm supply stores have generic guards, too. Just make sure the ones you get are listed as fitting DEERE mowers.

For guards at DEERE, try # AZ2131H, probably replaced by # AE36136, @ about $10.00 each

Ditto for the hold-downs... all sorts of choices at DEERE, or generic parts.

DEERE hold-downs... # Z7798H, replaced by # E127429, @ about $3.00 each.

One hold-down, that the strap on the sicklehead passes through is different, part # Z996H, replaced by part # AE57172, @ about $8.00.

The bare pitman stick is still available from Deere, as part # Z9298H, @ about $16.00. My local dealer has 3 on-hand, so they must not be TOO tough to get!

If you need the clamp parts for the pitman stick, they SHOULD be all available from DEERE, yet, too.

Take this info to the parts guy, and tell him to get off his butt, there's other stuff out here 'sides $200,000 new machinery!

Email me, if you have trouble getting someone to order you the cover.

My first thought is find a different Deere dealer. Most of the wear parts, sickle, pitmans, bearing box, etc. were available @ mine 2weeks ago. Not all in stock, but ordered for delivery in 2-3 days. The castings will need to be from a parts mower, or may even be ordered, don't know how many are still available. Good luck, properly set up great old mower.

I have NOS pitmans for the JD #5 mower. I think that I have about 6 left. These are complete with the iron ends attached. Part #Z5662. Back in 1980 I bought out the stock of a hardware store that was closing. I also have 1 pitman stick left. Let me know if you are interested.
