I've posted some pics under the help identify link on this website. This planter belonged to my Grandfather and I'm trying to restore it. I'm wanting to know approximately what year and model it is. I know it's a JD since it's got the raised casting on it. However, I can't find a number stamped in the beam anywhere to identify the model. Can anyone help identify it so I can order a manual for it? I'd really like to get an original manual for it, but that maybe asking alot given the age of the planter. Thanks for any help.

Was it green before? It has an enclosed gear box if I looked correctly. Deere panters started with #9, then the #99 and then the 999 which they made a long time, even after World war 2 if I remember correctly. I would bet that is what the model is. Was it equipped with fertilizer to start with as that was an option. My 2 cents worth.

Thanks for the information. Yes, it was green but I have sandblasted and have put 1 base coat on. It also has the enclosed gear box, but I've taken the chain off that connects back to the sproket on the rear axle. I haven't done anything with the hoppers since I wanted to replace these with some reproductions or buy some off another planter that would be similar to these. It had the hoppers for the fertilizer as well before I took them off. I'd also like to put some stickers back on it if I could get a picture of one similar to it to see how they were applied.

The 999 planter was made in a half dozen versions with a leter designation, I have yet to decifer that for my own and also a high wheel and low wheel versions, I also have not yet figured it out. I do have some parts operators books but they do not give enough detail to figure anything out, I got mine narrowed out some but forgot what I had figured it was. The 999 was made at least thru 1949 and there were different type fertilizer attachments for them, some I think may have been aftermarket. The earlier John Deere planters had a lot of red on them, do not know if they ever went to an all green 999, mine is nothing but rust.

Hi Leroy,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I had traces of green on it but it was mostly rust as well before I sandblasted it. My grandfather died when I was in first grade so I don't have alot of information on his planter. Do you have a way of scanning any of the pages of the manuals you have and emailing them to me? I'd really like any information that I can get on it.
Thanks for any additional info.
