Are the bearings a problem to change on subject baler I'm looking at to buy? Need a puller to remove? Are they simple sealed bearings like in the Shoup catalog or more heavyduty? How about the ones in the tailgate that you use a big allen wrench to work on?? If I buy the baler I plan to do a complete belt renew and ck all bearings while they are off. Thanks for comments.

Pretty straight forward. I own a torch & tend to use it, not fool around. but they are pretty easy to get to.

The one bearing behind the 3 sprockets took me a lot of head scratching. Finally looked at the manual, & those sprockets have a very different (to me) way of locking. A tappered, split sleeve under them. Take the one sprocket off by the 3 small bolts, screw 2 of the bolts back into the other tapped holes, & everything slides off real nice. Can't beat that, but read the manual, it's different than anything else I've run into. don't heat those, they are special & easy once you know.

gdh how many bales are you thinking of putting up with this baler every year? i got two of these balers and replaced belts on one 4 years ago at same time i added gathering wheels. wheels at time was 500.00 and best deal on 3 ply belts was 1200.00 .bearing last longer on that baler than other. as for bearing replacement its pretty stright forward but that triple sprocket set will make you think twice . get 10 or so 5/16 allen cap bolts (you lose some) to pull gears off and you dont snap heads off as with cheep bolts.pay special attenion to bearing on pick uprace track and lube offten, check and replace belt that drives pick up wheel.i use waste oil and spray chains when baling throudgt the day (when stopped for a cold drink).if you can find old tail gate shaft in salvage yard pick one up to have a spaer and try to get triple gear shaft as spare it fitts all single and double shalf.once you use that baler a year or two you will know your way around it in no time.i started with a C went to a F another F now a SJ and looking for a M i like vermeer balerd and have good lick with all

Have not had to change tailgate bearings yet but have done a few of the others though. Pulled a few right of with puller but last one I had to use a die grinder to cut it off. Ive been buying my bearings at a bearing supply store for around $32 cad with the two flanges. As for changing the belts I usually tie baler twine to belt as I remove it pulls twine through and around rollers then I can use the twine to help pull new belt through. Hope this helps. Have a good one eh?

You should be able to get a manual free from Vermeer if you call them, have your serial number ready.
I got a mamual for my 605 K that I bought recently sent to me for free.
Had a 605F good baler, ran it for 15 + years. What I started doing is getting one of those infred temperature gauges and when through baling I would check all bearings and change any that were getting a warmer than the other ones. You can do the same by feeling the bearing, I was just getting lazy and old and did not want to crawl up in the baler to check all the bearings. Good luck with it

The ones in the tailgate can be a pain, requiring the use of the blue wrench sometimes. You need 2 allen wrenches, one for each side because they will be pulling in opposite directions. They other bearings are straightforward to replace.

If you are going to work on the belts I would leave one on the baler so you will have a pattern to put the others back on by.

Get a manual. Certain adjustments have to be right so that the baler will start bales properly. Go by manual for this. Post back next season for help If you have trouble starting bales.

Check pick up teeth. Lubrication of the pick up is a weak point in that baler IMO.

Thanks for the comments on everything. Reason for questions is I'm just debating on doing some changes in haying equipment. I've bought hay for the past few yrs but it gets harder to get and pricey more so each year so may go back to baling again. I'll do 300 max. I have a newer Hesston but am looking for another baler that will put max weight in a bale. I'm debating on spending alot or going cheap like the 605 and spending maybe 1500 $ to refurbish it. Some of the new balers sure look tinny. Just getting some ideas and cost together. Hesston might be for sale if anyone needs a like new small baler. If I go older I'll keep as a backup. GDH
