How do you guys recommend getting a pulley off of a V-4 crankshaft? I bought a replacement engine for my baler off of a combine and I need to swap pulleys, but the won't budge! They don't have holes in them for a puller either.

The old motor I blew to pieces when the governor spring broke while baling, so I cut the crank. The good motor has a setscrew in the pulley that I broke several allen wrenches off in. The pain is the pulley I need is for a 4" flat belt and a type C V-belt, so it is odd shaped.

I got a setscrew with a broken allen wrench out with a small holesaw. I took the pilot drill out of the holesaw after I made a hole in a strip of 1/8" scrap. I clamped the strip to the pulley over the broken screw so that it served as a guide instead of the pilot drill. I then sawed down to the shaft and lifted the core out with a snap ring remover tool. You could either put in a bigger setscrew or make a new hole.

Couple of thoughts. Is the the pulley held on with a set screw or a gib key. if there is a gib key you will need to pull it before the pulley will move. They are tapered and were used as a wedge to hold pulleys on shafts.

That being said you may need to use a bearing splitter to get to the back side and pull near the shaft.

If your old engine is junk cut off the crankshaft and put it in a press. if you go to pulling on the belt grooves they will bust.
