I had a couple posts about a Gleaner model "K" combine, well I think I changed my mind. I was looking through a tractor/combine salvage yard and saw a Gleaner model "E" combine. It being smaller and more compact than the "K" may fit my needs a little better.
Does anybody know where there may be a Gleaner E for sale?

the closer to Michiogan the better with fuel being $4.25 a gallon.

thanks,

Brian

You are much better off to stick with the K. Size- they are basically the same, but the K has more advanced features and more parts are available. You"re dealing with a machine that is either three or four decades old. Go with the newer one. Simple example- raddle chain on the E has wood slats. They break, and raise holy hexx when they do. Early K might have the same, later ones have steel slats. Which do you want? In this case, size does not matter- they are pretty much the same- 2-3 row corn combine, 13 foot bean head. K will have newer technology, better cab, engine, etc. Why buy something that is over 40 years old? Should be plenty of machines available within a circle where price of fuel does not matter. The combine will burn more than your car.

Whatever machine you buy- judge each one individually, according to condition. Typical belt on a Gleaner is around $100. (BTW- JD 4400 has twice as many belt drives as a Gleaner F2). Bottom line, your initial cost to buy a combine is one thing- repair and maintenance are another. Whatever you purchase- look over it very carefully, inside and out. Cylinder bars, (worn, reversed?), chains- flat on the bottom equals wear level, wear levels on sheet metal, auger housings, bearings, do variable sheaves operate, leaking doors on clean grain elevator and tailings return, how many chaffers do you get with the machine- one for small grains, another for corn/beans? Several hundred dollar item right there. Then, which ones? Round end, square end, different tooth lengths, multiple choices, plus condition of them.

Don"t make the wrong decision and, get a little more combine in the same size package. $4.25 a gal. doesn"t mean much in the grand skeam of things. I"am in the N.E. corner of IL. I want to keep the AC. unite and forgot to throw in the straw chopper.

If a K is available it would have more power with the six cylinder engine. Plus K is the newer of the two and about the same size.
