I have found out that the "hydra Propulsion control" offered as an option on the 181 was just a hydraulic cylinder that controled the variable speed belt drive. So the correct answer is still 303, 404, 503.

181 late models offered true hydrostatic drive I am sure. I do not think the dealers retrofit 181 for rice with hydrostatic drives. They sure were out there. The hydralic control for the variable speed was normal for 181 etc. One question though I think oliver had an early version of hydralic drive or hybrid of sort for their combines. Oliver also had a track machine lever steer ;no back wheels. Only saw one.

This has been discussed on several different forums over the years and most everyone says that the IH 03 series was the first hydro.403 hydros seemed to be the most common. One would have to hunt to find a 303 hydro.

Looking further, I found, hydrostatic drive was optional on the 303 grain, standard on the 303 rice, optional on both the 403 grain and rice, optional on the 503 grain and standard on the 503 rice. I don't know why they did not make it standard on the 403 rice as on the two other rice models.

[I have done some research and found some reference to "hydr pulpulsion control" as an option on the 181 for $111.00. I don't know if this was true hydrostatic drive or not. On the 403 "hydrostatic drive" was offered as a $870.00 option on the grain machine and $965.00 on the rice machine. Hydrostatic was offered optional on the first year of 403 production.

Those 181's with hydrostqatic drive must have been research/pre production machines. The first standard production models to offer hydrostatic in the IHC line were the 03 series and it was introduced I think for the second year of production. Before that they were variable speed belt drive.

The 181 had it as an option. Not sure if the 151 had it as an option

All are correct. It was the 03 series re 303, 403, and 503 that were the first IHC combines to be offered with hydrostatic drive.

Our neighbour had a 403 that was all signed up promoting the hydro. IH eventually sent him new tin to replace the sign painting, about two years after the purchase.
