Here is my 1958 7-foot 30 combine and grandpa's 1967 4020. Running double-crop soybeans with the wheat straw near Lafayette, IN. This was about a month ago but I finally got aroung to plugging it into the computer.

The first grain sample (pictured) wasn't too bad at all but it continually got worse after that. I closed the bottom sieve gradually every time I dumped until the tailings clogged up but I kept getting more unthreashed pods. I guess the beans were just getting tougher? Started around 3:30 and finished about 5-6 PM with about 1 hour of light left abd had done roughly 5 acres. New rasp bars, about half of the smaller belts and possibly a few bearings are in order before we run it next time.

Sorry on the limited pictures, I was a 1-man photography & driver crew that day.

Thanks for looking

Looks like fun. I just left Purdue (graduated last spring). That sure would have been neat to see the outfit run.

I'll end up there in the fall of '09. Junior in high school right now in Zionsville, IN. About 1 hour south of the farm, Lafayette, etc. Lookin' at Ag Enginering or Ag Systems Management.

Thanks for the pictures.Nice outfit.

In the mid 1960's the neighbor across the road had a 55 JD SP and a #30 JD combine that he pulled with a 4010.

Awesome pics.I 've been wondering if anyone around indiana still uses a mounted picker to pick corn. I keep hoping to see someone using an old pulll type combine or picker or a mounted picker. I worked at lafayette today driving a truck and will again tuesday. Hope we dont get snow up there like they are predicting. If i didnt have my all crop i'd get a 30 or a 42. like the straight thru design. growing up i spent a lot of time on a 4010 cultivating.Maybe its been a while but the 4020 seemed bigger back then. With the loader on it and the size of the combine it looked like a 40 -60 hp tractor.

Where I live you don't farm unless you have an 8 row outfit or bigger. One of the reasons I can't afford to get in. It's all about big machinery, big land, and big money.

Where I live, Lafayette area also, there are many guys full timing with 6 rows, and a few with 4's.

There are also thousands of guys running part time and adding that extra 20 thousand to their yearly income.

Maybe I'm being over optimistic, but we can't all inherit $2,000,000 worth of land at $3000/acre, and pay another $90,000 a year in cash rent.

Look for a guy with 200 acres that doesn't want his farm to become just a number in someone's 2000 acre balance sheet. Offer to pay him to help you when he wants. Run a lean operation, make some money, and raise your kids on a grain farm.

If you want to farm, then farm. Thats the way to get started going big anyway.

Looking to run my all crop in soys next year for fun like you had. If you sold it at the elevator, did they dock you for all the pods in with it?

I really don't know. My Grandpa just pulls the wagons there when he has time and I haven't asked him.

Where exactly are you located? I live east of Lafayette near Michigantown. I have a Frankfort address and Geetingsville phone. A wonder I even know where I'm at.

Hi Dollar ,Good Pix , Not a badgrain sample either , if you are like Me you always look for ways to improve : perhaps the Concave setting was able to slip open somewhat , The real culprit ,On 2nd thought ,the cylindar speed may have slowed also ,Our old 30 did not have a tach either ,, Stands to reason that if the machine had not been run in monthes , the belts have a tendancy to tender up and slip a bit ,Compounded by the fact the crop tends to get tougher as the day progresses to night fall ,I recall My Dad was always cranking on the Cylindar speed crank, every other round or so .. Looks like the 4020 is a power shifter , best wishes , Jim

Make sure you didn't lose a few sections of your lower sieve. Maybe them pods are slipping through a hole in there somewhere.

I cut about the same with mine this year and had the same trouble. It was the first time I had cut beans with the 30 as I usually have more acres and need the 95. Looks like you had fun. Our beans averaged 5-15 BPA the year, most got mowed.
