gin1,We still run a 782 series 2 now in central Georgia and I know this picker pretty well.Im not quite clear on your question if none of the heads turn some of the time or if your problem is just on one drum. Please clairfy and I will be glad to help.Other than what I call a factory wind problem causing the back doors to stop up ,This is in my opinion the best pickerI.H. ever made. The newer series 2 and four row picker are real mechanic nitemares!

Haley, It's both heads not coming on or coming on sporadically. I just got it over a week ago & it did do a good job picking when they were running. I feel like it may be linked to a mechanism that turns them on but I'm lost. Former owner told me to have machine crawling foward when I engage heads & to make sure belts are tight. One "helper" pulled on belt tightener handle by mistake last week--that's 1 lever former owner told me not to touch. Thanks in advance for your help.

gin1,I think he told you the wrong lever to leave alone. We never use the lever that takes the head gearbox out of gear.We leave it engaged all the time and use the lever for the belt tensioner to take the heads in and out of gear. The 782 has a ring gear and pinion in the gearbox for the heads just like a car rearend that spins off of the hydraulic drive motor for the main trans. We have had problems with the cable binding and not letting the lever in the cab put the gearbox in gear good.(once you get it in gear leave it and dont mess with it unless you are servicing it)Your problem sounds like slipping belts.Watch the pulley on the head gearbox and see if it is turning when the heads are not.If you have anymore questions please feel free to ask.

The 622 was the last series I really fooled with, but if your whole head is not turning it sounds like the electric engagement clutch is slipping or the header drive belts could be slipping. I'm not exactly sure of what kind of header drive the 782 has.

I had a similiar problem a couple years ago on the front set of bars on mine on the right row. It would run fine until you hit the row and then the bars would stop turning or slow down and then the spindles would wrap with cotton. Turned out the top carrier bearing was going and the whole drum assembly had dropped down and was rubbing on the bottom assembly.Once I got that figured out(with the help over the phone from a 30 yr veteran IH mech.) it took about $50 in parts and 3 or 4 hrs of my labor and I was back in the field. The old 782II was made the last year of their run but it will still pick as good as any $250,000 picker.Just way slower.Haven't fired mine up yet this year. With the drought it doesn't really matter that much.Waiting on the ins. adjuster to come look at 32 acs. that is a total loss.Only leaves me with 16 acres to pick this yr.Waiting on a killing frost right now. Maybe this will help.

Thanks for the info. Been out of farming for a good while & now part-timing. Interested in cotton but have a lot to learn. Lot of changes since basagran/blazer where the only post products on beans, etc. Hope crop insurance works out for you. I'm in North Mississippi & we got about 4.5 inches of precip from may through august. Where are you located & do you plant a conventional or "stacked" variety? If so, is it worth the money?

I live in south Alabama about 50 Miles north of the Florida line.I planted 3 different varities this year.1 roundup ready,1 roundup flex, and 1 btroundup flex. The most expensive seed was the last and it was on the 32 acres that I will be collecting on.I think I will only plant flex varieties next year.Yield a little less but easier to keep clean.About 2" of rain on it all summer.Lack of rain really puts a damper on your enthusiasm of farming for a living.Hope you get your head problem figured out.I have a good friend that lives in Baldwyn,Miss. Big into MM tractors.

Tom, I'm 30 miles or less from Baldwyn & I thought "we" didn't get any rain this season. I guess it's got to get better.

Gin1, you probably Know Bill Williams then. His Dad was the MM dealer and then the White dealer in that area.Bill still farms and deals in junk MM's.He used to have a IH 622 picker I believe. He runs a White 8700 combine with a John Deere head on it for soybeans. He has bought several MM's from me over the years.Latest was a nice G955 that I had picked up.Now that I think about it that was 9 years ago.He is a deacon at one the Churches of Crist in that area. Can't remember the name of it right now though. He is a real character and extremely nice person.
