My reply to 1206's post about the Oliver below got me to thinking about how much ground my father was able to cover with the combines he ran years ago(early 60's). He farmed abou 400 acres and got in my Grandad's 120 acers of crop. Usually they grew 250 acres of Corn, 100 acres of wheat and 250 acres of Beans(100 doublecrop). He harvested this with a 45 John Deere and a 35 Oliver. All of the Corn was harvested with the John Deere running a 210 corn head on it. I will admit that it was usually close to Christmass when he finially finished but back then no one ever started harvest till late Sept. Still it seems like an amazing amount of acerage for those machines. I never remember him leaving any crop in the field and he actually did some custom harvesting for other farmers occasion.

Back in the late 60's-early 70's we sometimes ran over 650 acres per year thru a 1966 E Gleaner with a 13' grain head and a 2 row corn head.

In the late 1970's I had a neighbor that put over 1500 acres per year thru a 1977 4400 JD with a 16 ft header. It had terra tires with a Mud Hog plus a turbo. It still got stuck some.He replaced it with a 8820 in 1981.

i remember hearing of many guys who did custom work besides their own with one row pickers and pull type combines. and before that horses. all of this nation where row combines rumble thru fileds . was made fit for farming and farmed by hand labor and draft animals. a late friend who was born in 1882 once told me about the 40 acres across the road and behind me, that he remembered the farmer taking 2 weeks to plow with dolly and her mate. and he watched them in the 70s pull in there in one day with 2 tractors and a 5 +6 bottom plow and be done. now most farmers dont even own a plow right or wrong.

My family used to farm just over 1,000 acres with a couple hundred in summer fallow. So about 800 acres were harvested annually with a Case 1010 and still had time to do custom work for neighbors.

i put 40 acres of corn through a John Deere 45 using a 210 head this fall. 100 acres of soybeans through my 2 case 660 combines and 10 acres wheat through the cases. my grandpa used to harvest with a John Deere 12A combine on 100 acres a year. we sold the 12A 1 year ago because we needed the barn space.
