What company had the first hydrostatic drive combine. I know that in 1956 Oliver had an option on the models 35 and 40 called a Thomas Vari-Draulic drive. Not sure that it was a true hydrostatic drive but it used hydraulic fluid in an self contained unit to vary the speed of the machine.

IH claimed to be first out with hydrostatic drive. Deere books claim they were first. So who is right?

5020 is right there is a difference between hydrostat and hydraulic drive, One (hydrostat)is higher pressure than hydraulic drive. Case lawn tractors had a hydraulic drive, other had high pressure hydrostat

MM claimed the model S to be the first Self propelled combine to be built in the US, Massey was built in Canada. The model S came out in the early 40's I think 41. Others may correct this date. I think Holt built a combine around a crawler in the 20's some consider this to be first self propelled combine.

Harold, the model S MM came out in 1946 according to my original sales literature so MH and IH were well ahead of them.

In doing some further reading I see that Powerflow was introduced on MM SP combines in 1948.

Did it have a hydraulic pump and a motor?

5020 guy, Its kind of an odd looking deal driven by a big V-belt.Stop and take a look at that old 168? MM SP combine thats by you.The 168 MM SP also had Powerflow drive.Youd better get that MM spoken for.

Its too bad my scanner isnt working or I could show you a picture.

The Model "S" MM SP combine had Powerflow Drive which also was built by Thomas.I'm not sure what year it was first offered but it had to be before 1956.

The sales literature says that this drive is operated by hydraulic oil and air pressure built up in this unit and provides different ground speeds from zero to the maximum speed in any gear shift setting. The ground speed can be changed by regulating with a light touch of the control lever mounted on the steering wheel column.

I think the first combines with true hydrostatic transmissions like what they use today were introduced in 1964 on the JD 55/95 and on some of the IH combines.

55-95 JD and 403-503 IH were probably the first with true hydro drive.
