I got real fortunate to find and buy this dandy 1954 T-3 Gleaner SP combine today. It was last used 10 years ago and has been shedded for most of its life.Other than the engine(Ford 172) being stuck it looks to be field ready.Best of all it was only 60 miles from home.

Today I also looked at a AC 100,21A MH,S MM,and MH Clipper SP but didnt buy any of them.Found another 91 IH only 40 miles from home.

Hows things going Bill?It looks like the boys are fussing and fighting again over on Redpower.Thats one reason I dont post there any more at this time of the year.

A friend I work with spent last week in the Finger lakes region of NY and said theres plenty of moisture back there. We are drier here than anytime since 1953 plus we are having the warmest winter in history.16 days over 60 since Christmas.

As you can see I've gone combine crazy.(grin)

Nice little Gleaner. It reminds me of the one sitting in the bush on my brother's farm. Last used in the late eighties. Not sure what engine it had but I know some Gleaners had the Buda six cylinder just like my Cockshutt tractors. A lot of old combines went to the steel recyclers here in the last decade when scrap steel prices went up. Guys would cut them up with a torch, load the pieces with payloader onto a truck and off to IPSCO. I've saved all my old iron though.

Virgil, My information says that the Gleaner T-2 and T-3 combines were made only in 1954.I've had people tell me no such combine was ever built but when I show them a 16 page original sales catalog they change their mind.I'll soon have the real thing sitting in the shed for proof.

Its powered by a 45 hp OHV Ford 172 4 Cyl engine with 3.9 bore and 3.6 stroke. It was used in several Ford tractors during the 1950's-60's.I used to drive the neighbors 800 Ford tractor plowing in the 1960's and it had the 172 in it.

Albert,I've found most of my combines by using want ads in farm magazines.Believe me they work.I also used to have a huge antique tractor collection so know alot of people which sure helps.

There are no combine collectors at all in this area so I dont have any competition. The guy that I bought my T Gleaner from was amazed that I even knew what one was.He let me have it at a decent price since I was going to keep it shedded and not scrap it.I think his worst fear was that I was just buying it just for the motor like most are.

Yesterday I looked at a AC 100 that had been bought 5-6 years ago just for the motor. It had been shedded up to that point. With no motor and rotted out tires I had to pass on it for the time being.

I also looked at a 21A Massey that I know has sat outside for a long time as I looked at some tractors near it in 1977.Its totally rusted out and is parts only.It still has the original drive tires on it with lots of tread.Probably was parked in the early 60's.Theres a big MM baler near it with Wisconsin engine. Its restorable.

Combines I know own are the following.

Super 27 Massey
Gleaner T-3
35 Massey with corn head
35 Massey with grain head
(2) parts 35 MH's
91 IH with corn head
91 IH with grain head-no motor

I have less money in these than what one average restored M Farmall would cost. The big problem is hauling them and having enough shed room.Thats why combine collecting will never get big.

I totally agree about the cost to restore a combine. My dad thought I was NUTS when I wanted to get my 101, but I have yet to hit the $500 mark in parts and she is nearly ready to go to the field! On the flip side, my Farmall M restoration is nearing the $750 mark and I haven't even started painting yet. If (I should say when haha) I start loooking for another combine I'll take your advice of a want ad. Seems like it has worked! Just curious, what do you usually have to do to get your combines field ready? Mine sat for 25 years, but was shedded and needed only to have levers unfrozen and to get the engine tuned up. I'm in the process of rebuilding the grain head though... it was fairly rough, but the corn head is ready to roll.
