John Deere 112 - Solid State Ignition

I have recently purchased and older model John Deere 112 garden tractor. It has a Tecumseh HH100 engine with solid state ignition. The coil/magneto unit is damaged and I cannot seem to locate a replacement. I have done some research online and apparently this soild state magneto can be converted to an electronic type ignition??? The engine has no points and condenser, just a stator behind the flywheel which has a black wire that originally went to a terminal on the mag. I have researched this topic to the point where I can't seem to make sense of it! Every "conversion kit" I seem to find is for an ignition system originally using points and condenser.

Can anyone help me??? I have been told by some others that an automotive 12V coil with a ballast resistor will replace the original mag. I have tried this and I still have no spark. Obviously I am doing something wrong!

Any help would be greatly appreciated! As well, pictures or diagrams would help me out too! I work in the automotive parts industry, so anything automotive I can use would be great. I would rather stay away from the OEM dealers and small engine shops.

Thanks in advance for the help!

To get back to reply from yesterday(didn't get a chance to finish, had to take my mother to hospital)anyway, the reason coil & resistor didn't work is because you need points & condenser to fire coil(make & break)this is a standard ign setup used in cars for 50 yrs or more & also kohler, briggs & tecumseh on some of their eng.As far as solid state ign or conversions, you already have a solid state ign(pointless)the electronics for same being built into coil, the conversion kits you see are designed to be used with an orig point type ign coil in good & working condition and ign system powered off flywheel magnets not 12v,you can't fire an electronic ign with an electronic add on or conversion system.your best source of new/used parts is ebay in lawnmower parts & acc or eng section(this could take a couple of hrs)several of the online dealers or do a google search for rays mower shop in pa(don't have phone# handy)he's supposed to have a 5 acre tractor/mower graveyard.
