I need to resharpen the blades on my JD318 which I can do but I know they need to be balanced when I'm done. Can anyone tell me how to do that?

Do as the others say, put a nail in the wall, put blade on it, sharpen until it is close, because perfect balance is not needed, the first rock you hit, or the first time you mow and get grass build up on the blade, it is out of balance again. Thea is another reason why a deck bearing on an MTD, Craftsman, Murry, Poulan, (low priced units) do not last as long as the higher priced units, heavier bearings that will take being out of balance a little better.

I ALWAYS balance blades after sharpening. I am rebuilding a deck from a BUSH HOG/DIXION ZTR mower that was destroyed by out of balance blades. To balance all I use is a screw driver or bolt. When you get done sharpening, lay the blade on the bolt. You can roll the bolt under the blade until you find the balance point. If this point IS NOT in the center of the CENTER mounting hole. sharpen the edge on the SHORT side until the balance point and the center hole are in the same place.

hit a nail into your shop wall level and then hang the blade on it the heavy end will go down then grind a little off the heavy end until it balances

Hey fordtractor where did you steal my idea from that I stole off "Dudell"? LOL [ See blade balancing a few pages deeper ] But thats the way I do it Some may say they need to be perfect but the first stone you hit can knock it off balance anyway. I don't worry until I either feel or see excessive vibrations.
