Just changed fluid and filter on hydrostatic unit in a 1993 cub 1440 garden tractor. Used valvoline tractor hydraulic fluid and AC pf-13 filter (filter I use on my JD-140) Added + - 14 pints of fluid, went to move mower,it went forward sporatically, then nothing, will not move back or forward. Any ideas? Thanx

I suspect the filter and/or the fluid used aren't correct for the tractor. Try sending an e-mail inquiry to MTD through their website at www.mtdproducts.com. Ed.

Hello,I got my cub cadet 1440 working today. It was the fluid. The valvoline I put in was much too high in viscosity,my guess about 60,70w. The hytran is 10w,same wt. as atf,as used in JD garden tractors. My guess is atf could be used in cub cadets. I was told by case/ih service man that on a cc 383 lawn tractor to replace fluid with 30w hd engine oil,the higher viscosity will improve trans action on this old unit. By the way, what is with all of this crap about 82 and newer cubs being no good because MTD bought out the l&g from IH? It looks like most of the good design stuff is still being used today, probably made in same plants as before.Besides MTD made a bad ass garden tractor back in early 70's? with 3 point hitch, 16" back wheels, looks something like D 200 wheelhorse. I like all types of garden tractors, have 2 JD 140,1 JD 110 wheel horse RJ 58,753 the cub 1440 and have fixed up and sold cub 129,105,1450 etc, etc.People that like IH cubs should not turn their backs on cub cadets made today because International Harvester sold the line out to MTD any more than Chrysler (MoPar) fans should because Daimler took them over. The Cub Cadets made today would be little changed if IH still made them,as all things change with time.

Dave-Glad you got the 1440 up and running. There is nothing like the manufacturer's recommended parts and service to get these, or any, machines on the right track.
I don't recall seeing anything in this string that would indicate 1982 and newer MTD products " . . . being no good . . ."
The simple fact of the matter is that the site referred to limits discussion to Cub Cadet tractors mfg'd by International Harvester. This limitation in no way suggests that the later units produced by MTD are inferior or of lesser quality. The opinions expressed therein are those of the participants only.
The limitation is strictly because of the focus of interest of the participants. To do otherwise would be akin to posing queries or asking questions about CJ 5 Jeeps on the Chrysler Daimler bulletin board. It just ain't the same machine.
No need to become distraught or resort to name calling or derogatory innuendo. Just take your requests or queries to the proper location. If it doesn't exist create it and see if there are like minded ppl out there that may be of assistance to you.
Feel free to visit our site and forum for lots of fun and tons of information about Cub Cadet tractors mfg'd by International Harvester.

If MTD is your bag, they have a very informative site.

C'mon now you guys.
Just read the intro screen on the IH Cub Cadet forum listed by Jim and you will see that this forum deals with IH units only. Your queries about MTD units will likely be met with cold silence and quite possibly be deleted promptly.
IH quit building the Cub Cadets in 1981 and that unit was built long after that.
And by-the-way use HY-TRAN and the correct filter and I'll bet your troubles will disappear.

Bob, I guess you are right. I thought maybe a sincere question from one of *us*, a garden tractor enthusiast, would transcend the make, color, wars. You are correct. They only want IH posters. Nevertheless, a lot of parts are common between makes. Re: Kohler engines. I will not make this mistake again. I *do* believe that knowledge should be shared, regardless. I must be a relic from times past. Sammy, you have my apology. I was wrong to jump you. I will not post my nonsense again. I certainly *was* having a bad day. Jim

Hey Sammy. What you say is true, but there are still some folks that will help another without your inane, childish, color, manufacturer, whatever bigotry. Just trying to help another garden tractor friend. Piss off.

It's not working dude. Perhaps you can explain to me exactly what you meant. No reply was needed to my post offering the website but you felt a need to jump in. I'm not the villain. Examine *your* motives before you get in my face.

I'm comforted that you feel sorry for my wayward soul. You still did not answer the question. Yes, the forum I recommended is usually a 'died in the wool, Cub or nothing,' forum. There are though, a few there, who will answer a question from us unenlightened few. Even if it's not branded with the IH, Cub Cadet, logo. You're attempt to diffuse your comment is readily apparent. Explain to me the post you made and why. The MTD, Cadet thing, Has'nt been a secret for a long time. Yes, there are those who don't like it. But that's the way it is for now.
