whats the best way to make more horsepower out of a 18hp twin cylinder briggs? my goal is to make more horsepower in the engine and change the drive pulleys to make it go faster and have enough power to make it run with the pulley changes.

an 18hp twin briggs is not a heavy enough built engine to do much power adding. If you want more speed, reverse your drive pullies. Put the drive pully size on the tranny and the driven pully size on the engine, that will get more speed. But no power, though. We did that once, it would go about 30 MPH, no torque and burnt up hydro within about 15 mintes. Got too hot, to much input speed, too high of pump preesures, not enough cooling.

What exactly are you running that NEEDS more than 18 horsepower? Or is this just you thinking that more horsepower is better?

Ok. If all you want to do is travel along the ground at a higher rate of speed, then forget trying to modify the engine. With 18 hp you already have plenty of power. It takes very little power to move one of these tractors.

If you understand the math behind gear ratios, then focus on the pulley sizes. I assume that this is a vertical shaft engine with a belt on the crank pully that drives a pulley on the tranny. Leave the tranny pulley alone. Instead, use a larger pulley on the crankshaft and a longer belt.

Let's say that you have a six inch pulley on the tranny and a two inch pulley on the engine. That's a three to one reduction. If you change the engine pulley to a three inch, then you have just changed the ratio to 2 to 1. This would increase your ground speed by 50 percent. If the tractor does 6 mph stock, then the pulley change should result in 9 mph.

Lawn and garden tractors were not designed to travel at fast speeds so be careful. Wear a crash helmet if you intend to get into higher ground speeds because you have no suspension, bad brakes and not the greatest steering system.
