I have a john deere LT 166 Hydrostat. When you are trying to back up the tractor has no power. I had it to john deere and they said they did not know of a way to adjust the transmission. The tractor was doing OK in forward and now it is started getting where you have to push the forward pedal down and if it stops moving you can let up on the pedal and then push it back down and it will go. Is there a valve or some type of adjustment I can work on to fix the tractor it is a god tractor other that this problem. Thanks for any help. Johnny

Thanks for the replies. It is true that things are throw away now. It is a shame that john deere is coming to that same frame of mind. I might have to thank about going to another brand that is not as expensive to throw away.
I will check on the fixes that have been discribed and see if any of those are my problems.

Johnc,
Does this unit make any noise when you are using it? If it is quiet, then you probably have a belt issue or an issue with the control linkages.

"It is a shame that john deere is coming to that same frame of mind"

All of the old OEMs (JD, Cub, Wheel Horse, Simplicity, Dixie Chopper) are beign forced into this due to customer demand. People have got to the point they want price over quality. Well there is a fine line with that issue. The OEMs are trying to get to a price point you will buy, and to do that they have to cut corners and price somewhere, They start with the engines and transmissions, they are the most expensive parts. So, don't blame John Deere, If you as a consumer want a good tractor, spend the money. I do not want to be taken as an A$$, but you get what yo pay for. Jim

JT.
Does not seem to make a noise. It was doing this last year and I took it to JD and they put on all new belts. I have checked and the bests do seem to be tight. As for the linkage I do not know anything about that. I would think that the JD place checked it.
As far as the demand for throw away equipment. I understand what you are saying about trying to cut cost. The first JD mower I bought I called expensive. But when I bought it I knew I was getting something that would last and I would good quality. JD still has good products. But I have several old JD's A B D AR and all of them are built to be around another 50+ years. I belive that if John Deere would stick to the old school pay for what you get and make the best people, would still go back for their products. I would!

John
John Deere does still make quality equipment, but you got to pay for what you get, but they, to keep from loosing more customers were forced into the cheaper line of equipment, they had no choice, it was the demand of the consumer, or MTD, AYP, (husqvarna, Sears, Poulan, Poulan Pro)would have taken the small lawn tractor market from all the non-box store manufacturers. It is not only John Deere, Toro only makes a 1-2 tractors, the rest are all MTDs and I think they dropped them also. The only company that has not bowed to the box store mentality, (low price, no quality) is Simplicity. But back to your tranny problems, find the linkage that goes from your foot peddle and make sure it is stroking full forward and full backward.

Make sure the linkage isn't binding somewhere, and that you're getting full swashplate travel. Make sure the freewheel lever (in the back of tractor) isn't partially out. If neither of these work, your probably faced with a new (maybe a good used) trans. A last ditch effort that may gain you a year or two is to pull the trans out, flip it over, and drain all the oil out. Go get some 5W-50 FULL SYNTHETIC oil and fill it with 2.5 quarts of oil and hope for the best.

Most of these newer hydro's, sometimes called automatics, are THROWAWAY units. There is no external filter, no way to add oil, and little if any adjustments. When you start haveing problems with them, you throw them away and buy a new transmission. If you try to rebuild, the parts cost the same or more than a new trans. Not built as good as the older 140's and 317's.
