well i did it. i broke off a easy out in the head bolt on a k321 engine. i have read all the post on how to , but have not tried them yet, the easy out is 1/4 in side hole . i know i'm screwed, i want to give it one try and want to know the best way, expense is not an issue, expect buying a new long block or mini block. i would rather fix it since it is the original enigne that came with tractor. any input would be great.

Thanks for all the posts. I had broken an easy out off in a header bolt, flush with the header. Nothing would touch it. I finally removed it by first annealing it and letting it cool several times, making it a little more brittle. Then using a 1/8 in. carbide cutting bit (jagged teeth on the tip and sides, maybe used for cutting wall tile? don't know.), I bored and crushed through the easy out. Kept the rpms low and the bit oiled. I continued to bore until i had sufficient depth. I was then able to use the broken easy out, what was left of it, to extract the bolt. Lucky I Guess. Hope This Helps.

I have broken them into small pieces with a sharp center punch

I used to work as a machinist at a general machine shop that didn't allow the use of easy-outs. Their theory was that you'd be much worse off if you broke off something that was hardened....and that is correct.

We used to have all kinds of parts & equipment come in with broken bolts, and we were always successful WITHOUT the use of easy-outs.

The ONLY way to get that out is to have it taken out with an EDM.Check your phone book for electrical machining or call a machine shop and ask for a reference.

used to be able to buy some nitric acid and put a few drops around the bolt/easy out. This is really strong acid! will loosen thing up when it dissolves a few layers of metal atoms.

I know how you feel, i thought i was screwed too..... ..I was kind of lucky that the one that broke was the nearest to the exhaust on my K161 and the bolt hole was open on the bottom.....i heated and let cool quite a few times then took a dremel tool w/ diamond bits, i think it took three of them, the ones w/ the little round ball on the end and ate it out....start the bit in the middle of the broke easyout..... it took a while, but i got it out and ran a bootm tap thru it..... it"s all good now

There many ways to remove a broken "easy out" and every of these ways will test your patience.
Take the block to a machine shop and have them remove the broken piece or drill out the broken bolt and repair the threads.
I do this all the time at work and have found every broken bolt takes a different way to get it out.

when the easy out is down inside the bolt hole about 1/4" + and being a hard ssteel to drill through it seems impossible i have tried to drill out with carbide and cobalt bits but no luck.i tried chipping it out but that didnt work either .can the easy out be welded being it is in deep.

If u mean a broken head bolt maybe u can just weld a nut to what's left of the bolt and turn it out. It's worked for me in the past.
