I bought an old 1.5 ton roller, that had been repowered with electric start honda motor. The problem was the ignition switch was self contained on motor, and you had to reach under and into machine to start it.(uncomfortable and dangerous) I unhooked wires from switch, so I could remote mount starter on dash . I put 12 volts to coil wire, spun the motor over. It did not start, but the coil overheated and caught fire. Bottom line is I don't understand small gas engines. Is that wire just a kill wire? does the coil self energize? any help is greatly appreciated, I do not want to ruin another coil.

That wire going to the coil is the kill wire, The engine was electronic ignition until you put 12 volts to it and fried the coil. Now you need to replace the coil and any business card is close enough to set the air gap on the new one.
