Im at the end of my patience with this junk. Bought portable generator at auction with 8hp brigs magnatron engine. I checked for spark and it was ok so started cleaning er up. Pulled fly wheel cover off and wire brushed rust off of flywheel and magnet. That was the end of haveing a spark. did I ruin the coil ? please help.

check the ends of the coil legs and make sure that that you did burr the laminates over each other by wire brushing "against the grain" for this would impair the magnetic field as hal said sand paper the ends and do so going with the grain or parallel with the laminates, this removes burrs that cause the laminates to touch eachother

Jeff,
What did you gap the coil at where the legs go up against the flywheel? It should be .010, the thickness of a normall business card. If you did not set the correct air gap, you will not have fire. That would be the first thing I would check. Does it have a low oil shut down, and a little low on oil?
Jim

Check that you didn't pinch kill lead going to stop sw between flywheel cover & backplate for cover, also check wire insulation where it exits cover, may be nicked & wire shorting to block or flywheel cover, one other thing and it may sound silly, but we all overlook things when we're in a hurry,if stop sw is a toggle sw,is it set to run position?

That shouldn't have cause the coil to quit firing.
I would remove the coil and make sure the legs on the coil are clean. Rub them with some 320 or 400 grit to shine them up, then reinstall it. You may need to get the correct strips for your coil to get the correct clearance. I think it should be around .010". Then install a new plug and try to start it. Check those magnets for magnetism with a flat blade screwdriver. Sometimes these are overlooked, they should attract that screwdriver with some effort. Hal
