i have some info that might help anyone having carb problems on a 17hp briggs twin. my engine started surging (started out every now & then but kept getting more frequent) i thought it was just blocked jets so i checked & cleaned everything but nothing helped. then i noticed when i took off the top of the carb the float made a click and popped loose, upon closer examination i noticed the float was rubbing on the body and i noticed there was a small lip on the top edge of the float(plastc float) so i took some sandpaper and smoothed it down, now it doesn't rub or stick and the engine runs like a new one. might just be a 1 in a million defect but this might help anyone else having this problem.

I have found that when the B&S flat-twins get some age on them the need a richer fuel mixture that the factory fixed jet. I drill out the jet 2 or 3 numbered drill sizes larger than the factory size.
