hi. I have an old Craftsman/Case Custom 7 lawn tractor with a 1974 Briggs #190402/0657-1 engine. Have rebuilt the old updraft carb and have a problem with the engine bogging down when the mower is engaged. Get black smoke for a couple of seconds when this happens then it smooth's back out. This leads me to think it's not enough air. 2 fuel adjustments on the carb, Valves are ok,compression good, what is my aged feeble brain forgetting?

If you're getting black smoke from exhaust your hi-speed needle is probably set too rich, also when adj needles you must get hi-speed end set for max rpm & smoothest running before setting idle needle, there's an inter-action between them.If after adj carb you still get black smoke I would suspect weak or streched spring on gov linkage or a misadjusted gov/carb linkage.

Air bleed plugged -or- bent/damaged main nozzle (Make sure to remove main nozzle BEFORE bowl dissasembly OR it WILL be damaged!)

Check the springs that control governor.
