I have a JD 110 square fender with a k181 kohler engine. It has the magneto ignition (no coil). It was running until for some reason it lost spark. It would make a sizzling noise from the points so i replaced them with no change. Now the connection from the stator to the voltage regulator is smoking and sizzling. what should i do?

I think i figure out what went wrong:

I might have gotten a key switch from a battery ignition tractor and when it was used on my magneto/alternator tractor, it sent power to the wrong places.l My coil also now cracked probably due to this so i probably must buy a new one. DARN...

I have seen the magneto ignitions fail and apply 12 volts to the magneto circuit which will fry the mag. coil. I am not sure BUT I think the magneto coil is no longer available. You might use a Clinton/Tecumseh Tec P/N30560A if you have you heart set on keeping the mag. I used this coil to get a K181 Spec. no. 2817E running. The coil was No Longer Available from Kohler for this engine and I DID NOT have a 12 volt charging system to fall back on. The easiest fix since you have a battery and a charging system is to make the engine battery ignition using an internal resistance 12 volt coil. Wire your 110 like a later battery ignition 140 and you should be back on the road.

The points should NOT be sizzling, as they have NO battery power to them, if this is REALLY the magneto style of ignition.

What MAY have happened... the rectifier/regulator MAY have shorted, buring the wiring harness, and causing wires to touch that are now feeding battery voltage into your points and magneto coil.

NOT GOOD.

You'll probably need a new harness, or to carefully repair the old one, and replace the rectifier/regulator, the under-flywheel coil, probably the under-flywheel stator for the charging system, and, likely, the ignition switch.

BE SURE to get the correct parts, BY SERIAL NUMBER.
