the 10 hp briggs on my generator constantly surges while running and will not hold a steady speed. Have taken off fuel tank, fuel pump, filter, fuel lines and carb float bowl, cleaned and blown out main jet in carb thinking it is probably dirt in the fuel system. Put in fresh gas and still surging. Can the govenor system to carb linkage be at fault? This unit ran fine last time it was used 2 yrs ago

If it was running normally before you put it away, then it isn't the governor. After 2 years sitting, you've probably got gunk in the carb. You didn't clean the carb either. Do you wash your dishes at home like that? Just sprinkle some soap on them and wrinse them off??? No, you've got to tear the thing apart and actually run something thru them. Passages are small and hard to get to, save yourself the headache, and replace the carb and fuel lines. Take the tank and rinse it out really well and put a new fuel filter in it.

'Hunting' can be caused by a leak between the carb & the engine. I check by squirting a little starting fluid around the carb to engine gasket. If it speeds up you're sucking wind and the system is trying to compensate for an infinitaly variable mixture. Loose bolts, bad gasket, warped mounting surfaces, or a combination. Good luck! joe in ny

If you can keep gas level in tank higher than carb, try bypassing pump & go direct to carb and see if this cures problem, you may have a weak pump, bad diaphram, dirt in pump or sucking air on pump body, check carb body & carb ext(if eng has) for hairline cracks, also check gaskets for same, especially the one at block if eng has carb ext, screws may be loose or gasket might have compressed, allowing eng to suck air at same. What's the eng mod & type#s?

I always turn off the fuel and let the engine run till it dies when I am thru using any equipment I have so there is no varnish build in carb at all. took main jet out, cleaned with carb solvent and blew out with 90 lbs air. so main jet not a problem. The engine will only run halfway decent with the choke partially closed so I know it is a fuel starvation problem. Float is good and needle seat is free and operates properly. I also use MMO in my equipment so this has me stumped. Any other Ideas?

You will either have to replace the carb or do a more thorough job of cleaning the carb. The governor has nothing to do qith the surging, it is a fuel starvation problem. The jet you need to clean real good is the high speed jet in the carb. It ran fine 2 years ago becasue it probably was new then, and if it has been sitting for two years with gas in it you have a build up in the main jet of the carb.

Check for dirt or something stuck in float needle seat preventing float needle from seating all the way, also check float level & possibly a stuck float or hole in same allowing float to fill with gas. Before taking carb apart with eng running at normal operating rpm, hold arm on carb throttle shaft to stop from moving,if eng still surges & won't hold rpm, problem in carb,if eng runs steady holding arm then problem in gov setup. Is eng surging with load or when running unloaded(no load on gen)?
